I'd make it region free if I were you.
You might always want to check out retrobit and 8bitdo wired and wireless gamepads.
The Saturn, Playstation and Dreamcast really have a lot of similar design features don't they!
The Saturn I got second hand about a decade ago did have something in the expansion slot in the back. It turned out to be an mpeg cart allowing movie playback in the Saturn (Video CD). The cartridge port on top can house ram expansions and cheat cartridges – there's replay cartridges that provide extra RAM, cheat but also region free booting without the need for a mod of any kind. Pretty sweet way of booting my Japanese Saturn Shmups! 🙂
