Thanks Rich! My bushing just went out recently – fractured in half. I’m not a mechanic AT ALL, so “snaps in just like that” didn’t really explain the pain that I would go through… Still, your video helped TREMENDOUSLY! Thanks!

Simon Stad says:

good video. I’ll be taking a look at this soon. After I washed the engine bay, I found it incredibly hard to shift. I checked the linkage on the transaxle, both ends were intact, minimal play. I pulled those apart, added a touch of grease (as the metal mating studs were rusted), put it back together. Still hard to get into gear.

So, I’ll check this bushing next. If it did go, odd timing, right after I wash engine bay, but stranger things have happened.

Thank you very much for your comment. I was about to buy that exact part but I wanted to make sure it was the right one by looking at this video.

You should be all set for a long time now.

Thanks Rich , I replaced my bushing on my 92 sl Saturn ,the existing bushing broke but the one you recommended on line was better than the auto shop wont mentioned names but it had a small ring that covered on to the teeth it was useless it did not hold after three breakdowns, used twisty ties till the one you recommended came in the mail and is working perfectly …Thanks it was little challenging as it needed male strength but I got it with the Lords help …:)

richpin06a says:

That is what i was thinking when i did the job it looked like the bushing would last a lot longer.

saturnfan says:

Rich, I love your s-series vids and this one is no different. HOWEVER, you said the bushing hadn’t failed but you were going to replace it anyway. Man, judging by how hard it was to pry that cable ball out, I don’t think it was going to happen anytime soon. LOL. But thanks for this bushing write up nonetheless.

YesOuiSi says:

…as always: EXCELLENT and GREATLY DETAILED summary of a repair. On this, the only thing I would add would be to highly recommend the C-clamp method of fastening the new bushing. I found the channel locks to be a tricky fit underneath that metal shifter tower. Thanx for your excellent videos on repairs, Richpin!

richpin06a says:

If you get the right bushing for the car it should fit without any modifications.

richpin06a says:

Remove the console and you will be able to see the problem right away.

Zachary Andrew says:

Mine did that too, I was wondering if the new bushing should be rounded out inside, my new one was flat inside, could that possibly be why it keeps popping off?

Myke Vocal says:

Ps: my car is 246,xxx km I just wondering if my engine is gonna last long? There is no linking I put 1L of oil in 1 month I changes cold air intake fuel performances gas saver chip and lowering spring

Myke Vocal says:

Thank you! Do I need a new clutch? I want to make my car little bit faster is changing mt fuel injector and high pressure fuel pump makes any changes?

Wesley Harrison says:

richpin06a says:

There is no adjustment sounds like there might be a problem with the hydraulics or the clutch plate and disc.

richpin06a says:

You need to scan the computer and check the trouble codes stored then you will have a better idea what is wrong.

Myke Vocal says:

Ps: how I can adjust my clutch its to high! In my saturn sc2 coupe 97 km248,xxx Ty!

Myke Vocal says:

Thank you for the informative video! My bushing broke today… 2 hours from home. Thank goodness for a zip tie and 6″ of 550 cord to get it together (temporarily) so I can make it back home. I will be replacing this as soon as the one I ordered from saturnbushingman comes in!

twig256 says:

Thank you …I was wandering about that after I saw you video if I had only know would have done it myself …Thankyou for all your help ,…your videos are such a great help for me to be able to fix my car ..Thanks

richpin06a says:

It is easy to not get the new bushing all the way on if you are not careful. It is possible that this might have been the case.

twig256 says:

Hi Rich ,thanks for this video my bushing on my car went out had it replaced with a new on but it popped off again this time it was not broken my mechanic does not know why could you give me some advice on this please he popped it back on but so nervous about it doing the same thing ..do you think that there could be something else that is causing the new bushing to pop off any advice would be greatly appreciated ps thanks for blower resistor vid.

BabyBubbles0001 says:

Perfect ”How To” Video. Thanks, bud!

richpin06a says:

This bushing will usually do the trick not much else is a problem in this area.

l3urns1 says:

thank you very much for the video, my shifter bushing just went out, its a 99 at 168k. can you tell me what other things i should be replacing? again thank you

richpin06a says:

You can not shift into gears with the engine on or off.Remove the console to see if a shifter cable is out of place.

gallego7891 says:

Hi I have a 99 saturn sl2 and recently I was backing out of a spot then went to put the car in 1st and the shifter won’t let me put in. I’m pretty sure it’s stuck in reverse. Someone suggested that it might be the linkage which is how I stumbled upon your video. What would be a sign that the linkage cable or bushing is broken?

theword2011 says:

Awesome video, this is the exact model of mine and the broken bushing was precisely the problem! So easy to do with your video. Thank you!!

richpin06a says:

Not sure as i have never operated a shifter with low mileage to compare.

richpin06a says:

I have not worked on the Aerio so i am not sure.

ViolentBiscuits says:

I’ve got quite a bit of play in my shifter (doesn’t affect the shifting of gears) when the car is in each gear, it can move about 3/4 -1 inch side to side in each gate, is this normal for the Saturn or are the bushings worn out? My car has almost 189k on it.

morganix007 says:

Hey! My car ( Aerio 2004 manual transmission) just broke the cable that is in the driver’s side. What it really broke was the plastic pieces that goes inside the piece that attaches to the stick. I think that it would be that black thing inside the white connector in 09:57.

richpin06a says:

You can replace the ends but it is a lot of work i might serious conceder just replacing the whole shift cable.

herostatuslol says:

hey richpin I recently replaced my clutch and when we took off the shift cable bushing from the tranny side the whole bushing fell out and is no more. Is there any way to replace this bushing? I have a post on saturnfans with a picture but nobody seems to be responding
