Saturn has a recall out for november 00 to February 01 l200s. I would take
it to go get checked. Also the l61 is an interference engine

wilkesjournal says:

That’s wrong. Timing chains wear out just like timing belts do. If allowed
to run until it breaks, it will cause far more damage by bending valves.

William Rhodes says:

chances are the motor is junk the guides worn out and quit running when the
timing chain jumped ?

Milledgevillain731 says:

Timing BELTS need replaced at intervals. Timing chains shouldn’t need
replaced unless theres obviously a problem. I about bet this chain problem
originated with the oiler hole. I believe in ’03 GM enlarged the oiler for
the chain on the Ecotecs.

michael lanham says:

i have got a 2000 saturn ls1 can you tell me if the timming chine is on top
of the motter or on the side i have to replace the timmingchine thanks

jerry turner says:

it jumped cuz many valves were bent. i replaced all valves and it runs reat
now.

peanutbutterisfu says:

2000 and some 2001 had a recall. you can tell one of the guides broke on
this vid

ladefreakndah says:

Yes the pre 04′ ecotecs had a restrictive timing chain oiler which starved
the chain at low rpm’s.

the1bigace says:

Did the chain fail while dirving? That could easilly bend your valves. That
sucks when crap like that happens. But that’s also why prevenative
maintenence exists. GM makes Service intervals for this very reason. ignore
them and you put extra stress on other parts, in this case catastrophic
damage of your internals. 80k miles is about when a timing chain needs
replacing.

ladefreakndah says:

True modern engines need to be better serviced than in the past but the
ecotecs prior to 2004 had a restrictive timing chain oiler that would
starve the chain at idle. I couldn’t see the valve train all that well but
his engine didn’t look gunked up.

doridoidae says:

Saturn has a recall out on this year and model vehicle for timing chain
problems. Is this related?
