I just cleaned the living krap outta the throttle body on my 98 SC1, only
I didn’t replace the idle air control solenoid, and still experiencing high
idle. Is it pretty safe to say that I may need to replace the IAC
solenoid? Along with cleaning the throttle body, I cleaned the IAC really
really well, because it was gunked up too, just like you said,
How much is an idle control motor??? My Saturn has this exact problem and I
need to fix it asap!
An old unused tooth brush might of helped scrub that clean + the solvent.

I have a 99 sl1 and my idle drops below 500 rpm and sometimes dies on me.

HI your video is great. I cleaned the carbon out of the throttle body and I
installed the new IAC and also put a new gasket on. When I start the car it
revs up to about 2 and a half and then takes a second to idle back down to
a little above 1. I also smelled a little gas. Do you think it could be the
TPS?
I have a problem with my 04 ION when the air is on and the car comes to a
slow crawl in traffic or stop light the car will do the shimmy and stall
out.. would that same procedure be recomended for mine as well?
I did this on my 2000 Saturn SL1 and it is still fluctuating. Any other

im having a no start issue with my 99 saturn sl, could the IACV have
anythiung to do with this? Ive replaced fuel pump, and other sensors…so
this is where Im at. I took the throttle body off, and it is badly gunked.
But wondering if this could cause a no start?

The spec. for idle speed is 800rpm.
That was ‘way’ dirty btw, they don’t need to be that dirty to cause idle
problems. Doing it yourself, might as well clean the TPS, throttle position
sensor too.
Your coolant temp problem sounds like a thermostat is stuck open or a
blockage in the heater core. I would replace the thermostat and flush out
the heater core to start. Also you probably need to replace the IAC or
“idle air control” valve and that will take care of your surging or high
idle.
2001 Saturn sc1 I did all this and mine is still running at a high idle not
as bad though.

SW2 96 model also, lately it has been having many troubles 1 in the
mornings and after runs sometime, it gets acelerated a lot,, and in the
mornings it stops several times, 2 several times also even I do not
acelerate it does it self, so I have to push the brake to stops it, so if I
park the car it starts moving it self and getting speed,, do you think this
can helps my problem? Hopefully you can help me out thanks

Excellent video, I checked my 96 Saturn SL2 today and my throttle body was
filthy black also. I used Berryman B12 Throttle body cleaner and it now
looks like new.

i have a 02 saturn sl sohc problem is somewhat similar to the car in this
viideo. my idle stays too high. but its erratic. it will come and go. it
wont happen all the time. and usually it has to warm up first for it to
happen. and it wont happen until i give it a rev. then it will just stay
there. eventually it will drop down but usually not until i rev it up
again. but i have to do that many times before it will drop. it almost acts
like a carbureted vehicle that is stuck on fast idle! hahaha

i just got this 1996 saturn, i cleaned the whole throtle body, also removed
the intake manifold, cleaned the inside, replaced its gasket. my idle goes
very high when i start it. when i stop the idle goes way low. does it means
my IAC is not working propertly? PLEASE HELP. Thanks for your videos by the

IAC valves go bad all the time usually causing the car to idle to fast or
not at all. Thanks for the comment.
also, when the car was at a full stop and the RPM’s were low, i kept on
driving in (had to get it back home somehow) and as I stepped on the gas,
the temp gauge was making its way back to 1/2.

This was my exact problem with my 02 saturn. Did this and fixed it right up!
I have the exact same problem. I sprayed the air intake gasket with brake
cleaner between cylinder 1 and 2 and the idle went way down, then up when I
stopped spraying, it revved up again. Problem solved for me, just have to
change it now

My 97 saturn would hang at a high idle and only dropped to normal after
stopping the car. Cleaned out the PCV valve (very cruddy) and normal
operation resumed. A PVC valve is cheap when troubleshooting this type of
problem.

I’ll try this, battling an idle around 3K on a chilly morning, and more
like 1500-2K on warmer days, IAC and Throttle position sensor have been
changed, both O2 sensors were done and EGR was hung, I cleaned it out and
now found this, Thank you!
Good video. I also have a 96 Saturn Sl2. Would installing a filter element
between the PCV and the intake manifold reduce the oil and sludge build up
inside the intake? I remember the old 1970’s cars all used to have that
filter just outside of the air cleaner housing. What do you think?

Great video! Thanks. Replacing the IAC valve was actually as easy as your
video showed. I probably saved a couple hundred bucks by not taking it to a
shop. For anyone else who needs to do this, a 10mm DEEP socket is a must
along with the T20 bit. For as easy as this was, I would even recommend
that those with this motor remove the throttle body just for the sake of
cleaning it even if your IAC valve isn’t bad. Mine was totally covered with
carbon.

My Saturn 1993 coupe is idling too low. with air on, it stalls when
starting. The low idle problem occurred after my husband “fixed” the air
con( he put that stuff in that replaced Freon). Anybody know how to fix a
low idle on an old Saturn? help, I am scarred to drive it. Thank you

i cleaned the TB on my saturn 94 and replaced the coolant temp sensor and
my check engine light came off… however, the idling issue still occurs
but not as often. What i still have issues with is my temp gauge. once i
start the car and let it warm up, it ll go all the way to 1/2, then as i
start driving it it keeps going up and down between 1/2 and 3/4. radiator
is not leaking, coolant level is where it should be, and heater is not
blowing hot air at all. any ideas!?!?!

i have the 98 saturn sl1 and i did clean the throttle body but for some
reason still get that high surge. Question. if u have the car running with
the throttle body exposed, spraying a can of cleaner in it while reving the
engine will this help. is it best to remove the iac and clean it or just
sprayin through the hole on the throttle body is all i need to do? i don’t
want to cause any problems. when taking off from a stop it drags a bit but
then smooths out.
@omarG19100 It sounds like you might have a vacuum leak. To directly answer
your question yes you can spray GM top engine cleaner or sea foam products
directly into the throttle body. Follow the instructions on the products.
This should clean most of the carbon out of the intake manifold and off the
intake valves.

I have a 96 sl2 and it has a really hard time starting in addition to this
idle issue. it’ll start and immediately stall then its just a dog to start
again and i have to give it lots of gas to get it up and running but once
its running and in gear, it’s fine and runs great
Hey Jonesy! Nice video! This past Summer, the idle would not rest below
1100. It typically idles @ 800. I replaced the airfilter and it cleared up.
Now, we just got our first cold snap, 13 degrees, and the idle won’t rest
below 1350 and the speedometer is sluggish and inaccurate. After a warmup
the speedo seems to come back to life but the idle is still high. Kind of a
strange combination? I’ll be replacing the VSS and the idle control valve
once it warms up a bit. Any other ideas?
@Jonesy do the iac control ever goes totally bad where u will have to
rep[lace it? or do u just keep cleaning it? i check for intake leaks but
found none.
