SRG320 just updated the Sega Saturn core with new code…AGAIN…so of course we are going to test the new binary and see how it performs. Seriously…the improvements in performance and compatibility is a small retro gaming miracle!

Note: this is the BRAND NEW April build of the Sega Saturn core for MiSTer FPGA and NEW GAMES WORK! Including the Saturn version of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Nocturne in the Moonlight)

This is part of the MiSter FPGA Sega Saturn testing series…but now with a brand new core build! So lets put it through its paces! Because the audio quality on the new core just sounds PERFECT…in spots!

THIS IS THE LATEST TEST OF 2023…and I can’t wait to follow along with the Sega Saturn FPGA core progress in 2023. It’s been incredible to watch the retrogaming community test the Sega Saturn core from Srg320 and I can’t wait to see more improvements!

Note: You can use a single RAM or dual RAM build of the Sega Saturn core for MiSTer FPGA. You CURRENTLY need the Unstable Main version of MiSTer FPGA so I added in a MiSTer FPGA unstable Main tutorial and setup guide into the video!

Consider supporting SRG320. He could use it!

I asked, you answered…and I try to listen πŸ™‚ Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware…so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.

On this episode of our MiSTer series we are going to be talking about the recent happenings in the MiSTer FPGA scene in regards to the Sega Saturn! The work in progress alpha FPGA core was recently updated and you are apparently retrogaming hungry because you asked for more Sega Saturn videos…so here you go! Never say I don’t make what you ask for πŸ™‚

Follow the MiSTer FPGA setup guide and tutorial in the video so you can start playing the new Sega Saturn core too! Because you need to manually install the core and the newest Unstable Main on your MiSTer FPGA to get this all to work!

But progress on the Sega Saturn FPGA core continues on! and more games than ever are being tested!

So much fun to have Saturn in the works after last year getting the MiSTer PSX / PS1 core!

ADVENTURE TACO says:

Hey homies! If you encounter games with scratchy sound try disabling the SCSP DSP sound in the debug menu .. you might miss a sound effect or two but it makes a lot of games sound a million times better .. try it with panzer dragoon II!

silverfoenix says:

I would like to see:
Virtual On: Cyber Troopers , Virtua Cop 2 or House of the dead & Panzer Dragoon.

Goro Fujita says:

It will be on SEGA Saturn that CRT shaders/filters will be the most needed to make those checkerboard meshes look and behave as they were intended to. I with MiSTer had the power to run some of those more advanced CRT shadowmask based shaders featured on reshade and retroarch. Not everyone has a decent CRT TV laying around. Maybe it will be able to do so one day. The basic scanline features it has just aren't up to par nor are they enough for a full spectrum solution, from what I've seen.

And time will dictated that CRTs will eventually get dimmer, or just fail altogether

ASMR Retro Gaming says:

Is chd supported on this update?

Mohamed HASSAIRI says:

Please:
Power instinct 3 (Groove on Fight)
Batsugun & Battle Garega

Retro Reloaded says:

At what point do I need to update to dual ram? Will games run slower on my single ram eventually?

zhan85 says:

Unfortunately still no Grandia it seems.

haughty garbage says:

Would this Saturn version have the same shimmering on some 3d rendered objects on the ps1 core?

sixtyfps says:

The shadows on 3 Dirty Dwarves aren't supposed to be the same colors as the character sprites, though, right?

Michael Theurer says:

3 dirty dwarves the shadows don't look correct (missing color gain reduction?) and some of the things on screen are competing for z space like the manhole covers.

John Szewczyk says:

Yes, the Saturn version is where the excitement is, if you've already played the PSX version 10,000 times. Unlimited Wing Smash, Speed Boots, extra familiars, new enemies and revamped sprites (due to lack of transparency)… so much new content!

It's such a shame that the CRT screen is still off center because SOTN is all I care to play and it was already nearly perfect last time. Are you sure it's working correctly though? The Holy Cross special crush only showed a column of light in my test, and Dracula's beam looked weird. I've never played on console.
