@richpin06a Thanks for the very helpful info. I didn’t realize how much
room there was between the subframe and the body. Just to make sure I
understand more, I remove the left CV shaft, shift linkage, clutch slave
cylinder and ignition control module from side of trans. then its a go for
sliding the trans from motor? Thanks again.

idk whats up with my truck yesterday i had to start it in first and it
shifted really hard and you couldnt come to a complete stop like the clutch
wouldnt disiguage all the way and a few min ago i got in it started it in
nutreal and put it in gear just fine and i could come to a stop and put it
in reverse with no prob any1 know what the problem might be and what i
should do

allokots says:

@baker4030 you might need to change your master cylinder or check for fluid
leaks first try bleeding it.

richpin06a says:

@EagleTalons1 I also like to remove the right drive shaft because it is
easier to put the transmission back in place with it not being there.

richpin06a says:

If you remove the shift tower from the top of the transaxle you do not have
to drop it from the car to service the clutch just slid the transaxle off
the engine and into the space between the body and the subframe..

richpin I have a 99 Saturn SL2 and was wondering on Saturns could I drop
the sub frame to get to the trans. or would I have to pull the engine or
witch is easyer? A friend just dropped the sub on his chevy cavalier to get
to the trans. but i’m not sure if Saturns are a little different in that
area or not. Never did a front wheel drive clutch change before. Wish you
had a step by step video on replacing a 99 Saturn SL2 clutch richpin. 🙂

i remember when i changed my clutch out, nice wonderful 8 hour job by my
self with a lift and full tools…nothing like a wonderful sub frame drop
to challenge someone. it was actually a wonderful learning experience, and
i put a stage 2 clutch in the stockers place to handle the power since the
stock clutch gave up after 40k, and the tranny gave up the ghost a few
miles after that ( diff pin blew during snow storm, clutch went out a week
before the snow storm)

hp11208 says:

both side axle have to be remove when replacing the clutch

nightmathzombieethan says:

I know this is kind of off topic, but are all ring gear holders specific? I
think I need to replace my flywheel when i replace my clutch, but I don’t
want to buy an expensive part (Which I may not be able to find anyway) if
I’m only going to use it once…. I DO know some people have been able to
jury-rig their own for just a few dollars…. Any ideas would be
appreciated!

richpin06a says:

@EagleTalons1 Easiest way is leave the subframe alone remove the shift
tower from the transmission slide the transmission off the motor and stick
it into the space between the body and the subframe.Wish i videoed the last
one i did, next time.

Peter Crowell says:

I wanted to know, is it pretty easy to replace a clutch on a 1993 SL2 5
speed ?…I viewed your Starter remove/install for the SL2 and it helped me
out 100%. That top starter bolt is time consuming, your idea about taping
the bolt to an drive extension worked great, Thanks for the reply ! …I am
used to working on old cars, with a lot of room in the engine area.

richpin06a says:

@hp11208 No you can leave the passenger side in,it just takes a little more
work lining things up when you replace the transmission.

hp11208 says:

yes it take some more time,i usually rotate the crank shaft pulley and it
slips rigth in

xybaby says:

Very informative! It would be greater if you can give a walkthrough on how
to replace a clutch.
