Canada is reviewing its purchase of U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets because of Trump’s trade war.

The government’s willingness to consider abandoning at least some of its commitment to the F-35 fighter jet speaks volumes about how deeply Canada’s relationship with the United States has deteriorated.

The United States, a longtime defense partner of Canada, is now such an unreliable ally that the federal government is reluctant to buy weapons from it.

Canada needs a new flight plan for its fighter jets.
As you know, U.S. President Donald Trump has declared a trade war on Canada and threatened to use economic force to make it the 51st state.

Trump’s threats have infuriated Canadians.

Canadians are canceling trips south of the border, and many are avoiding buying American goods when possible.

The trade war that Trump started continues to grow.
Canadian officials remain concerned about the continuing unpredictability of the United States.

Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has asked Defense Minister Bill Blair to review the U.S. purchase of the F-35 fighter jets to see if there are other options given the changing environment, Blair’s spokesman said yesterday.

Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government initially planned to buy Boeing Super Hornets as a temporary measure, then reversed its decision due to a trade dispute between Boeing and Bombardier.

After a long competitive process, the Liberals eventually decided to return to the F-35, planning to buy 88 of the cutting-edge stealth fighter jets.
With the first batch of aircraft expected to arrive next year, it is notable that Canada is reluctant to question the purchase.

But Donald Trump’s presidency has shaken Canada-United States relations so deeply.

The contract to buy the F-35 from United States military contractor Lockheed Martin is now in place, said Defence Department Press Secretary Laurent de Casanove, and Canada has made a legal commitment to fund the first 16 aircraft.

Carney, who was sworn in on Friday, said he has asked Blair to work with the military to determine whether the F-35 contract is the best investment for Canada in its current form and whether there are other options that could better meet Canada’s needs.

“To be clear, the F-35 contract has not been cancelled, but we need to do our homework, given the changing environment, and make sure the contract is in the best interests of Canadians and the Canadian Armed Forces,” De Casanove said.

The government had budgeted about C$19 billion, or $13 billion, for the F-35 purchase, the largest investment in the Royal Canadian Air Force in more than 30 years.

The full lifecycle of the program is expected to cost C$70 billion.

A Lockheed Martin spokesman said the company values its strong history with the Royal Canadian Air Force and said the best answer to questions about Canada’s F-35 procurement would be provided by the Canadian and United States governments.

The agreement to buy 88 jets came in 2023 after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with former President Joe Biden.

The Canadian government said in 2022 that Lockheed Martin had been accepted as the highest bidder for a new fighter jet to replace the aging F-18, deciding against Boeing’s Super Hornet and the Swedish-made Saab Gripen.

That ended years of negotiations over its aging fleet. The purchase would fulfill Canada’s obligations to defend North American airspace.
