Saab Cold Start Timing Chain Noise

Saab Cold Start Timing Chain Noise

1999 Saab 9-3, Immaculate engine with no sludge. 110000miles. Just had head gasket done. Came back with this noise. Lifters are hard. Oil pressure is high a…

B204. My engine is perfect inside-might as well have 500 miles on it. It
runs very well, and aside from startup it runs smoothly and quietly.

Messerschmit452 says:

@multinjok I stethoscoped it…doesnt seem to be the water pump. Seems to
be emanating from the timing chain cover. I’ve been investigating a header
leak, but will be sure to double check the water pump/hydraulic pump.Keep
ideas coming though!

multinjok says:

What about the timing chain? I know it gets loose in these saab engines…
it should be replaced every 60.000 km if i am correct?

Doug B says:

it sounded almost like tappet rap. Of course, timing chain can’t be ruled
out. I know when I replaced my cylinder head at 257,000mi, just recently,
it was quite noisy until oil got fully into the valve train. I am going to
venture into replacing the balance chain components, even though there is
no noise coming from there. My tensioner spec is 3mm beyond acceptable,
which makes me nervous!

Messerschmit452 says:

So, the issue turned out to be (knock on wood) that the upper timing chain
guide was brittle and hard and had shrunk. This corresponded in that the
chain made it dance about in its carrier. Replaced the guide and the noise
went away. In the process of diagnosing this problem I also cut out the
balance chain. Hope those who view this get ideas for their own probs.

timing chain

Messerschmit452 says:

No, the belt, which is in V6 engines, needs to be done every 60k MILES. The
chain theoretically lasts forever, the 4 cylinder turbo engines have chains
and an auto tensioner. The mechanic that did the head gasket job says the
chain is within spec. There has been speculation from others that it is the
balance chain, but they wear only when abused and sludged-this engine
endured neither.

multinjok says:

60.000 miles not km…Fixed.

multinjok says:

water pump?

multinjok says:

@Messerschmit452 yeah you are right…Saab says that because of possible
oil sludge timing chaing should be replaced every 60.000 km on B205 and
B235 engines…But yours is B204 if i am correct. It has the red DI cassete.

multinjok says:

@Messerschmit452 I looked more in to this timing chain problems…And I see
that there aren’t any saab recomendations about when to replace it… My
false claim i got from another forum.
