I even got out the jumper cables for a jump and nothing at all…then doing my research on the web plus Youtube to get a handle of what it could be?
So, like maybe 3 to 4 hrs later I went out to start the engine and it started up just fine…so I was thinking if the engine was too hot that maybe it is the CPS! Anyways I go to see a movie that was over 2 hrs long – then again the same problem no start – I checked the engine is still hot – so I got lucky after starting a few times & made it home.

John Baldwin says:

I was looking at possible faults of the alternator?…I hadn’t replaced my key fob battery right away as I saw the SID message but I did just last week…and also I think? I recall there was a message for my anti-theft service like 2011 or 2012? which I haven’t even replaced knowing there is a limited 10 yr. battery life. I don’t know if this could also be a problem for starting the car?
Like this afternoon made a 2.1 mi trip to the store came home then maybe 3 hrs later the car cannot start…

John Baldwin says:

So, when starting the engine there is no turning over sound just silence? I’ve noticed when I start the engine 1st time it is all good then I take a short trip to the store etc. 2nd start there is nothing – battery is new this year as I had a 5 yr. replacement warranty. – last year I had to replace on 2 separate occasions the throttle body & later the direct ignition cassette…I was having starting issues still & discovered that a spark plug was broken clear through as I replaced them all new.

Thebogman123 says:

could be a bad throttle body, they fail a lot on the 9-5

Question my 2001 saab 9-5 idles funny like around 2000 rpms where it should be a little under 1000 but for some reason it idles perfect whenever i push in the brake all the way to the floor …. it also starts up weird and sounds like it wants to die . And the turbo is also not spooling up all the way have no Idea changed spark plugs and the coil pack as well as all o2 sensors and the water pump sooooo idk I need some help please from someone more knowledgeable about these cars thank you all

Derek Anthony Farmer says:

Just for everyones info … a Faulty CPS will NOT trigger a ‘Check Engine’ light. You may find you car displays numerous symptoms, from non starting when hot to a triggered Limp Home Mode. I read stories of people buying all sort of things from new/recon trottle bodies to D.I. Cartridges only to discover the CPS was at fault. To err on the side of caution is to change it every 80000 to 100000 miles (or carry a spare in the boot) if your unsure of your cars service history. SAABS FOREVER!

I have a 1997 Saab 900se turbo, here is the problem : I will drive the car for a little while , then shut it off let say to get some gas , then start it and its as if it is starting out in 2 nd or 3rd gear. If I let it sit a little and then drive its starts off in its correct gear ??

robslocs93 says:

When this happens. Does the transmission and check engine light come on?

Zachary Pryor says:

I used your video on my 2003 9-3 and it was in the same place! Thanks

Chris Rideout says:

Would it leak oil

rogerbeginify says:

Thanks for posting going to tackle it now! My car would run great never stall go to the store just as you described it would not start upon my return. Let it cool for sometime it would fire right up.

Thebogman123 says:

dont confuse the neutral safety switch for automatic transmissions, the crank position sensor is a different component, and should be replaced if faulty, not cleaned, etc

piratechickenpie says:

the neutral saftey switch can be taken apart and cleaned, its just hard dirty old grease that causes the problem. ive fixed this issue but its occasionally having a no start moment but still cranking, is it more commonly the crank sensor or the cam sensor?

multinjok says:

Just replaced this sensor yesterday… It is easier to do it from under the car.

svartturbo says:

On my 9-5 i changed the crank position sensor, that didn´t solv my problem.
My car is an automatic and what solved my startingproblem was a change of the gear position sensor.

Thebogman123 says:

make sure the installation is correct, sometimes people forget to remove the old sealing washer, and also it could be another problem such as fuel pump

soner uludogan says:

Hi! i have a 2002 saab 95 aero i have the same problem and after this video i change the crankshaft postion sensor but i still have the same problem,,can you all help me please thank you..

Ronald Indria says:

thank you for Info.. very use full!!

RetroElectroville says:

This is a big issue with these models. Aka, Neutral Position Sensor, or Neutral Safety Switch; most mechanics don’t even know to look for this issue when a Saab won’t start. From what I hear, over time it goes ‘bad’ due to its location near the heat of the engine. We used to just pour water on the switch and it worked every time…pretty funny. After replacing it, it’d be a good idea to put an aluminum shield between it and the engine to keep it from getting too hot. Thanks for the video!
