Saab 9-5 DIY: Serpentine Belt and Pulley Replacement – Trionic Seven

This video shows how to inspect and replace the serpentine belt/poly-v-belt on a 4-cylinder gasoline-powered Saab 9-5, model years 1998-2010 (Engine types B205 and B235). If you have a squeak from the right-hand side of the engine, it might be that your serpentine belt needs to be replaced.

In this video, we also replace the upper idler pulley. We use a Mapco pulley and a Contitech 6pk2415 belt.

The procedure is similar for the 4-cylinder gasoline-powered Saab 9-3 with the black DI cassette, although the engine mount is different.

Swedish: Så här byter man drivremmen (även kallat multirem, eller flerspårrem, ibland felaktigt kallat fläktrem) på en Saab 9-5.

Thanks for the instructions. I have a '98 9-5. How do I access the tension pulley attached to the tensioner? Is it an allen wrench that is required to pull it off?

Detaljert og bra video! Thanks a lot; I do have to bookmark this site as I do have the same sound from the serpentine belt.

Hi!
That metal part with square cavity on 11:5912:02 (I'm not sure how it's called in English) is visibly oscillating when my engine (B205E, 04' Saab 9-5 Kombi) is idling. Not sure if it is normal or if it's something to follow up?

Skit bra info !

Does anyone know if the belt from a 9-5 fit to a 9-3? The engine on the 9-3 is 2.0 185 HP.

Joeseph Wolfe says:

I definitely noticed that I have this same symptom on my 06 9-5. The one thing that I did notice that was a bit odd was the belt tensioner was vibrating heavily (jumping back and forth a bit) i also noticed that at a stop/idle rpm that the steering wheel requires more effort to turn (almost as if I have no power steering). My question is how common/likely is it that the belt tensioner has failed as well (seems to be the case) and if it should be moving/vibrating at all.

Rob Wyman says:

Thank's for posting. Was wondering how to do this =)

Kendal Greene says:

Can i do the same with my 2001 Sabb Se

fritzbr101 says:

My 2001 9-3 pulley below the power staring is loose and cutting into the engine is this the same issue as the 9-5.

Awesome information

Alexander Harris says:

Great video. One important note. Some older cars will have pulleys with torx bolts instead of normal hex head. These strip very easily. Care should be taken to soak these with penetrating oil before trying to break them loose.

Peter Chomanič says:

"(Engine types B204 and B234)" I believe you wanetd to say 205 and 235 🙂
204 & 234 were used on ng900 & 9000, even early 93s, but never on 95s, even if some people rebuild them to that.
Thanks for video 🙂
