I would start by removing the trunk trim. It’s held in place with plastic rivets, you simply press in the center portion of the rivet a small amount, and the rivet will easily pull out. An example of this is in my 9-3 Bumper and Headlight removal video. You should be able to see the OnStar antenna nut and wire connections. Just disconnect everything, and replace the antenna. If you have no use for OnStar you can buy a “Dummy” antenna from the dealer or Saab online parts sites.
No, water doesn’t get into it. There is a seal around the middle stud that attaches to the roof. I’ve taken mine off thinking it wasn’t secured properly and noticed the design. It’s definitely supposed to sit above the roof. It’s an ugly and odd design. I wish it sat flush. The only way to make it sit flush is to remove the actual GPS/ Cellular antenna and replace it with a dummy. But then your OnStar would be disabled and your SID would display NO OnStar.
Great Vid and I own 03 saab 9-3 vector (purchased used) I have always wondered why there is the gap. Doesn’t water get into it? I thought about sealing it with sealant.
You must then visit Prince Edward Island, home to, and shrine to Lucy’s Anne of Green Gables. I live in New Brunswick; 5 hours from NS. Travelling for service of my Saab is out of the question. I rely on the kindness of intellectually curious individuals such as yourself to help me find answers to issues so i can have ’em serviced at home. All information is greatly appreciated. I cant wait to get them out of storage and back on road. Come on summer!
Cheers, Texas!
Thanks Ann! Always happy to help out. Nova Scotia! How beautiful! One of my all time favorite novel series Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables is set close by. I’ve always wanted to visit. And at least you have a Saab dealer, the nearest dealer from me is a few hundred miles away. And with an entire family driving Saabs, I’ve become the Saab tech! =)
I was anxiously awaiting this video and you delivered! After viewing, maybe the “gap” between the roof and the antenna is intentional…..which tells me that the one and only Saab dealership in Nova Scotia doesn’t know everything they should about Saabs because i had the vehicle thoroughly inspected by them before i bought it. You are awesome, thanks.

You’ll need a 22 wrench to tighten or remove.

Do you have any ideas on how best to replace or salvage a badly decaying trunk mounted shark fin antenna for a 2006 9-3 convertible. Thanks
Thanks. Now I am worry-free
