Thanks for your help and the video.
I also found a link by searching google for saab key battery to a site called serioussaab dot co dot uk
is useful – has info about other Saab key fobs and battery sizes.
I used a small screwdriver to press in the hole and levered the cover off, but you got me doing the right thing.

Before you get another key case, what I will suggest is that drill a tiny hole in the corner of the key near the broken plastic and place a TINY key ring in the new hole. Make sure you DO NOT drill through the chip, etc!!!
I will update you latter for full replacement.

TheUsufructuary says:

The part of my plastic fob that hooks on a key ring has broken off. Any idea how to fit a new case? Cheers.

And, you hit the nail right on its head with your comments as to why Saab, in its infinite wisdom and customer user-friendliness …. would design such an idiosyncratic key fob — which is part of the reason why Saab has been on life-support. Thanks for the validation on this Swedish drunk-in-the-sauna engineering-head-fake, Skip.

1SobriQuette says:

Skip, you are, Sir, an intrepid genius and a HERO. Thank you so much. It’s the Fourth of July weekend and, needless to say, this funky key situation began Friday evening, just after business hours (and five automotive types at three places, not Saab, could not figure it out Saturday). My holiday weekend may be recouped. Headin’ for the corkscrews pronto. And I’ll need a drink after this Swedish meatball situation.

Austin Holdsworth says:

Wow. I came on here in utter frustration and your video has saved me loosing my hair. Thank You.

I have a 2006 Saab 9-5 and the key is exactly the same. I tried a corkscrew, but it did not work. I had a digital multimeter laying around, and I tried one of the probes, and it easily popped it open. For those less tech-savy than I, it is simply a sharp thin round piesce of metal, but it is thicker than a needle. A thick needle, and awl should also work. Great video though, I thought that was a screw hole.

566dave says:

Very good video. It should also be disclosed that you damage the key case this way and another video should be used to demostrate how to put the new battery in.

flarnell says:

Thank you, i don’t know why they would make so difficult though

StarAviator says:

Thanks! It took me three different corkscrews to find one that was big enough, but it popped right open!
