How NOT to replace the timing chain – Revisiting Laxen, my old Saab 9-5 Aero – Trionic Seven

Laxen is back! And now we know why the engine failed. Sad to say, it was a result of the botched timing chain replacement back in 2015. The balance chain sprockets fell away from the shafts, causing internal engine damage. Don’t cheap out!

I give a tour, start up, and exhaust sound of this 2002 Saab 9-5 Aero Salomon Edition in Laser Red. Listen to that silky smooth engine noise after replacing the chains and rebuilding the engine. All bearings and seals are new.

Glad to see that Saabs aren't thrown away because mostly they are great cars. Does your 09 9-5 have Saab's engine or is it GM's?

Just bought myself this exact model of Saab 9-5 Aero (2002, 250 HK, Blue Metallic though, love that colour) to replace the crashed 9-5 2.3T SportKombi (2005), some idiot decided he shouldn't adhere to the priority-to-the-right-rule (Högerregeln) when my other half was heading back from her work.
However, it's not as well maintained as yours was/is, have some issues of rust here and there I have to fix and various small things I need to replace here and there (+ that the engine light came on while I was driving home from buying it, gonna have to check that on Tuesday).
Gonna have to start learning to tinker with it myself a bit more to be able to save money on repairs and regular service-checkups and such.

My engine runs also that quiet.
I got the b204 turbo engine

But it didnt run that great when I bought it.

Ok I see you can do a lot of stuff yourself. But of course you need special tools.
And you need a proper workshop manual.
The right tools for the job.

a lot of patience also of course.

You can master that chain job yourself quite easy.
And a turbo is really easy to change.

You can also decide to rebuilt the turbo yourself and buy a kit for €35,- up to €80,- max.

Or buy a new turbo core which you can install yourself.

a chain kit is between €100,- and €300,- Only the kit.

Saabs are not too difficult to work with.

I prefer a chain over a toothed belt. But a toothed belt is so much more easy to replace.

Mind to put locktite on the tensioner bolt.

Haha. Or it will loosen up and your tensioner will fail. Haha.

I got that. And its much worse then the ballancer chain.

I put on a new belt waterpump tensioner and wheels So it drives as smooth as new now.
But alright that is a GM engine x20xev.

I bet the turbo failed due to low oil pressure.
