Brian Tobin says:

The easiest way is to use a multimeter. With the car off, the battery will
show some voltage, 12-13 volts normally. Now, start the car and turn on the
air-conditioner so there is a heavy load on the electrical system. Test the
battery again with the multimeter, it should show 14+ volts. If it shows 12
or less, then your alternator is not feeding current to the battery. NOTE:
I do this test in the video at 10:13.

Thank you!

Great video ! With regards IMS failures for anyone purchasing a Boxster
simply hook it up to Durametric diagnostic software and look for camshaft
deviations between banks one and two! This can be a good indicator of an
IMS on it’s way toward the infamous “death rattle”.

Brian Tobin says:

That a big expense as a preventative measure. It’s one of those things that
either happens or doesn’t. It probably costs $1500-$2000 to fix. Mine was
fixed under original warranty and they also replaced the clutch for a total
cost to me of about $800.

Great job, thanks 4 up load With best regards from Germany now I can fix my
problem.

Brian Tobin says:

Not too many problems. I had a n IMS/rear main seal failure that required
an engine replacement under warranty. Beyond that, this was the first major
failure on the car. I always wanted to try to fix it and I got the change.
It was a fun project and saved alot of money.

EricMakesMovies says:

thanks for making this. How many issues have you had with your Boxster? How
many have you fixed yourself?

EricMakesMovies says:

Cool. Aside from the engine being hard to get to it does not look terribly
difficult. The IMS/RMS failure seems to be pretty common. Kind of a drag on
a car of this price. I know you got it fixed under warranty but do you have
an idea of how much a preventative repair would cost? For instance i buy a
Boxster and the first thing i do is get that fixed. Whats the cost?

RobertoO says:

I’m trying to pull out the alternator but it doesn’t come out! I dont know
how to do it.. I guess i will need to open the coolant system by taking off
that 6 bolts but im afraid to entering some air on coolant system, other
option is to take off the colectors but it is more scaring to me..

Stacy A. Clark says:

how does one test to make sure the alternator is bad on a 2002 Bfoxster

Charlie Wolf says:

Only took me 20 mins from start to finish. 4 Hours to remove the bolt.
Dude… 2 hits with a 5Lb mallet and it was out. Trick for removal is; 1.
Use 15mm socket, extension bar and ratchet 1/2″ driver to loosten the bolt,
2. Retract bolt about 7mm (the distace you want to push the bushing, plus a
mm or two), 3. Hold the 15mm socket hard over the bolt (nice and stable),
4. Make the bolt your B with a couple of decent whacks with a 5Lb mallet to
the back of the extension bar. DONE
