Porsche 996 911 In-Dash Garage Door Opener DIY Hack! How To Install!

Porsche 996 911 In-Dash Garage Door Opener DIY Hack! How To Install!

Hi Everyone, ever wanted a built-in garage door opener in your Porsche 996 911 (2000-2005)? Tired of the one on the key chain or marring up your visor? In this DIY video, I show you how to use your existing remote and wire it into a switch you can mount in a blank spot in your center console. When you are done you have a totally stock look and all it cost you was the cost of the switch and a bit of wire! It is an awesome mod/hack. The switch is a two-position switch so you can control two doors independently. I show you the places to solder for a Genie and a LiftMaster garage door opener and tell you how to trace the circuit so you can use any opener with a micro switch! The total time is about an hour and you’ll be super psyched with the results!

Here is everything you’ll need:

• New Switch: Porsche 996 Targa Shade Switch – 996-613-119-10-A05
• Key fob garage door opener remote programmed for your garage door(s)
• Some two-conductor wire (like speaker wire) ! 12” 18-24awg
• Some single wire ~12” 24awg
• (5) female spade crimp-on connectors
• Wire cutters/crimpers
• Soldering iron
• Solder
• Multi-Meter/Continuity Checker

Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll get right back to you.

STEPHENS POUNDS says:

I love that video. 5*

Clifton Frey says:

When the battery in the remote dies you have to take everything apart to replace it? Or are you connected to power through the lights?

tjm3roundrock says:

Frannie that was a really well done video. Excellent level of detail, explanation, and demonstration. I'm glad Nick M pointed me over to your channel. Cheers from Round Rock, Texas.

I bought my 996 turbo a year ago. Like you, I'm loving it. The first mod I did was an Alpine head unit with Car Play. This is a big upgrade. I'm at the stage where I'm going to start doing some performance mods. However, thanks to you, your (my) garage door opener will be the second mod of many. Great video – thank you

michaelpsmusic says:

Awesome video. I think one of the best 996 help videos of any sort I've seen — super clear instructions and covers everything.

Franny,I always enjoy HFG videos.  Thank you for this one.  I would like to add one other possibility for the opener. If you buy a used home link from most any car, eBay, you can do that hack with it and hook it to the power in the car so no battery replacement in the future.   I have used the phone prep plug that floats around in the center console. Brown = ground, yellow/black = phone mute, green/black = switched 12v, red/green = un-switched 12v.

Very instructive, thank you very much, there is nothing like doing things on one's own with tools and knowledge 🙂

Ladies that know how to use a soldering iron are HOT!

Home Built By Jeff says:

Nice detailed step by step. I could learn a thing or two about well lit, clear video when I explain something ;). Good stuff Franny.

Mike Edwards says:

Great job as usual! Only thing I'd do different would be to install a fresh Duracell battery for peace of mind, even if it was a new remote with a factory included battery.

OMG!!!!!! GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!

Nick F says:

They sell spade connector splitters that you could use to tap the light power.

steffydog1 says:

Fab video and explanation as always, love the videos. Thanks for sharing.

sportscarnut says:

Nice work as usual, but… why didn't you install a 12V-to-3V DC-to-DC converter and get rid of the battery?

mac daddy says:

Extremely informative video! I am going to try this on my Jaguar! Thank you for posting.

Johnathon Thorn says:

You've just inspired me… my 308 "aerial (antenna) switch" is disconnected and non-functional, due to the stereo controlling the power antenna. Think I'm going to wire that switch to the garage door. 🙂
