Here’s what happens when the magnesium cam gear cover fails on a 16-valve Porsche 944S/S2. These covers tend to swell and crack with age they’re exposed to humidity and repetitive heat cycles, resulting in broken mounting bosses and misalignment issues that can affect ignition response.
I have the 1988 S and it looks a lot like mine. Didn’t have any pieces fall into the timing belts, but maybe that happened to an earlier owner. I was able to use a couple rev nut to bolt the original housings together and line things up. But will definitely be keeping an eye on things.
Glad to see this! Love the 16 valve engines!
As usual, you are a fountain of knowledge!
Mine needs the same repair. Hopefully getting a new cover next month 🙂
Was it magnesium for weight reduction?
Lucky that broken piece didn't wreck all the belts.
Change all belts, water pump i presume.
is the new Al cover an oem or aftermarket part?
