â–ºVintage 911s are full of quirks compared to the many other European cars we love. Its rear-engine positioning is chief among them, making servicing quite a bit different compared to others. Vintage 911s are also increasing in age, and the money of their drivetrains needs significant servicing. Removing the engine and transmission in an air-cooled 911 is a great way to get after some of the more fiddly jobs and take a better look at the engine’s overall health.
Removing the engine and transmission from a 911 3.2 Carrera is more involved than its predecessors but significantly easier than its successors. The most challenging part is ensuring all hoses and wires have been disconnected before you can drop the engine and transmission out of the bottom of the car. Beyond that, there are four drivetrain mount fasteners to remove, and the whole thing comes free.
In this video, Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro’s Professional DIYer, removes the drivetrain from a vintage air-cooled Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera.

Where the axle stubs attached to the transmission looked very dry (no grease). Did I miss something? Great video
I'll stick to the Audi. I've gone through a lot of trouble for her…
Wow, what a lot of work! In the newer units, like the 992, has the work been simplified? Or is it even more difficult?
Great, clear and expert description. Thanks Mike.
