How to replace the Water Pump on a Porsche Boxster

How to replace the Water Pump on a Porsche Boxster

The water pump is an essential part of the cooling system in water cooled Porsches. If your water pump is showing signs of wear you should replace it.

You say you are installing an original Porsche water pump with a plastic impeller. I believe the plastic impeller is the source of water pump failures on these Porsches'. It allegedly disintegrates. Get one with a metal impeller instead. Regarding your instructions for evaluating a pump for coolant leaks/crust around the drive shaft weep hole- IMO many pumps on many makes of cars are replaced needlessly because of a little seepage around this seal. The seal itself is lubed by a little seepage. A major Japanese OEM water pump manufacturer says this on their web site (I haven't checked this advice recently). They indicate a little seepage is normal but to monitor coolant level for a month or so. If it remains full, the observed seepage/crust is not indicative of a weak water pump that requires replacement. A big three detroit manufacturer also says some seepage is normal (probably to reduce warranty claims). I have been looking at coolant crust for the past 70k miles on my DD and the pump is still ok. Of course, this is a judgement call. Also, do not dry spin the impeller before you install the pump. The seal is ceramic and requires lubrication from coolant. YMMV

Hello Burner's, I have a boxster from 1997, buy the cooler oil but the new version has a hose and I have no idea where it is connected 🙁 I have looked for all kinds of information in images and videos and only shows the hose attached to the oil cooler but does not show where the other end is reconnected. If anyone knows or has images that can help me I would thank him a million because the same porsche from Panamá does not know and tried to communicate with germany and just shows him a sketch and they also do not understand.thanks for your time.

My pully just snapped off my water pump on my cayman s i know its very similar. Any recommendations to avoid any coolant air bubbles on my engine and permanently damaging it?

I love your videos. You explain everything thoroughly and make it very easy to follow for those of us who have limited experience in car repair. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated…

**Helpful Tip** First and foremost thank you so much for making this video. My install went on and off without a glitch. For those who are worried about the bolt he had to make the FrankenWrench for. I used a 1/4 drive 10mm on a 2" orbital extension and it came out in seconds. Keep making these awesome videos and happy Boxstering!

Wunderboy says:

Thx for the video. Mine failed at 58k. Saw coolant under the middle of car. Drove it 3 miles to the dealer and my coolant level light went on just as I pulled in. Lol.

Do you know if this is similar on a 987 Boxster? I really enjoy your DIY videos but I'm in the market for a 987.

Ted Jim says:

hey thank you alot my first porsche i own and i pretty much figure out everything until the water pump took a dump on me… now my question is i will not be draining the coolant since i already drained it before but i will loose coolant after changing the pump… how many gallons should i used to put back on the car? how many did u use? i am using 50/50 not porsche coolant

RK Ashburn says:

Hi Ben

I want to replace the water pump, if I drain the coolant from the drain plug and start to remove the bolts on the water pump will that be OK, what do think ? So that I can save time pulling other hoses and putting back in ?

Hey, can I ask you a question ?
