Well Mario Arias I am not able to reply to your comment but I will here in
case you check back. The Rav4 uses what they call an “electro-magnetic
coupler” its pretty similar to the viscous coupler used on the matrix. To
be honest I have never tore into one of those yet and am not sure if they
are serviceable or not. You may have to have it looked at, at a shop or
give the Toyota dealer parts department a call and see.

that fluid looked pretty shot. but maybe that’s how it should look?
probably good to change it while you’re in there.

Hi, can u pls help? I had 2 bad hubs, when I replaced it worked and noise
was gone. Today I thought that replacing the same hub that was making noise
was going to fix the problem, but not this time. Brand new hub assembly in
place, drove and the noise continue. Me and my mechanic drove and it looks
like he said is my differential, but after watching your video I am pretty
sure is just the bearing and dust deflector. Where can I get this parts, I
have a 2005 Toyota Matrix xr awd. Thanks man. I am the guy that told u
about zinc and copper for your hair. Not sure if u remember.

Thanks for posting i am in the middle of the repair right now. I am
having trouble removing the housing. I am wiggling it but is doesn’t want
to move. I can get the housing to slide about 3/16 of an inch, but I
cannot get the rest out. Any tips?

Thanks again for a great video.

Congratulation…! Excellent video Eric, is a huge help. I have the same
problem in a Rav4 2006 Engine: 2.40 – 4 cyl Transmission: AUTOMATIC. I
wonder if this could be the same process or different? Where I can buy the
bearings?
Can you help me please, Thanks.

Nice work, too bad so many people will have already spent hundreds fixing
this. Stay gold.

This video is huge. My wife’s ’03 Vibe AWD has this same problem. I had
it on a lift yesterday at my local shop and the front (i.e. viscous
coupler) is way noisier than the back (differential). Am I wrong is
thinking that it doesn’t appear any more difficult than changing a set of
brake rotors? Also, what are the torque specs for the 8 bolts? Any idea?

Antonio Morales says:

Good afternoon Dr O,
I’m having a hard time trying to find, in the internet, where to purchase
the bearings for the Viscous Couple for my AWD 2004 Toyota Matrix. Any
suggestions…?
Tony~

Robert Jensen says:

Finally was able to remove housing by bolting a steel bar with the drive
shafts bolts and banging it with a hammer.

I also fount it difficult to remove small bearing that was left in the
differential after the housing was removed. Using a two jaw puller I was
finally able to remove that as well. I had to grind the catches on the
puller to make them thin enough to fit behind the bearing.

The steps you demonstrated on the video worked perfectly and now the noise
is gone!

Thanks again.
