cable and was thinking about replacing it myself. How do i get to the
broken cable and how do I remove it. I took apart everything in the cabin,
I am able to remove inside, i just cant seem to reach it in the engine as
it is blocked by other engine parts.

Sorry to say they aren’t doing a damn thing

saruh555 says:

I’m really upset; Im a 25 year old female college student & not only do I
not have the time for this bs but I don’t have the money either! GM should
take responsibility for their mistake and recall this POS shifter cable.
Thank you for shedding light on GM’s shortcomings.

carquestions . says:

On any car that is 10 years old things seem a lot harder because of rust.
Easy? , for a mechanic it would be of moderate difficulty. My advice? –
take your time and give it a try, what have you got to lose?

sxxxychocolate says:

i just had my 2002 cavalier 4dr ls sport fixed b/c of this problem. cost me
$275 + inconvenience. luckily it broke when it was parked at a gas station.
this is the first time it has happened. i got it in 2004 and have not had
problems (knock wood) with it. Question: have the new cables shops use to
replace this gotten better?

theMereEffect says:

transmission good on my sunfire til…today….which is 103000+ miles so
far.

carquestions . says:

No problem – Glad I could help For my records, what was the year and
mileage of your car when it failed?

NDSautomotive says:

My sunfire never gave any problem with the transmission. I have my sunfire
since 2004 and the car never gave me any problems. Just a fuel pump but
that was my fault. It has189,000 miles and still running new. Don’t what
you saying but I took care of this car since day1

saruh555 says:

My 03 Chev Cavalier’s shift cable broke last month and I took it to an auto
body shop – they gave me a pretty good deal to fix it. They did not replace
the cable, they put another nut and bolt in and up until last Thurs it was
working. My car is now broke down once again and stuck in reverse (wont
start since it’s in gear) the E brake has been on since last thurs so it
won’t roll away.

truesurf says:

Mine just failed at 144,000 miles on a 99 cavalier, but the rubber bushing
fell apart inside the ball joint that connects to the shift lever atop the
transmission. Is the unit hard to get out?

Hook & Ring Films says:

Thanks for this post what else could go wrong on this damn car. Talk about
a throw away, I’ve damn near had to replace everything and now the shifter
cable…..

carquestions . says:

@uavito94 Thanks for the info – you a tech? parts? If you know of any
failing in that year range let us know

aocriffraff2 says:

They same thing just happened to my 2004 cavalier. It was so sudden. I
pulled in my driveway and could not put it in park becuase I lost all
shifting capabilities. How do i fix this? Do you have a part number for the
cable by chance?

carquestions . says:

@sparda1123 Sorry to hear that – you’re right. If a product lets you down
why would you buy another one? The only clear messege a consumer can give a
major corporation is to stop buying their products. When it comes to cars,
buy the brand if it has had good reliability ratings for 3 or more years in
a row for most of its models.

Jeffrey Knapp says:

Will this work on a 2002 chevy cavalier/? This happened exactly to me 🙁
!!!!

rodolfo23cr says:

I had this exact same problem and the cable broke in the exact same place..
99 sunfire with the LD9 engine

chimacc773 says:

ok i replaced my cable and it worked before i was only able to down shift
and shifting back would not work id put it in park but it really still be
in drive so id have to go under the car and pull the thing just so i could
put it in park just so i could get my key out but it works fine now sicnce
i replaced the cable and it was a very easy job thanks for the video also

lapdog2020 says:

Do you have any Idea How to flash a computerized transmition on a 2003
sunfire or where i can get it done. I’m in Canada and I’m still looking GM
said they want nothing to do with it cause it’s an after market turbo kit
going in to the car.

Kevin Robichaud says:

it worked, we just oerderd the new cable for 75$ thanks alot

LuvStonedDIVA says:

Hi this is very helpful. I’ve been searching and searching for the answer
to this problem. I own a 2000 chevy cavalier and the very same thing
happened to me in december 2010. I had just pulled in the driveway and went
to select park and the shifting seemed smoother than usual and to my
surprise it wasn’t parked. It was temporarily fixed by a family mechanic
but I’ve been looking for the exact name of the piece that failed so I
could get it replaced.

carquestions . says:

@buckeyefan0812 Local GM dealer is the best bet

Ben Lee says:

My 2004 Chevy Cavalier had this problem at around 74,000 miles.

carquestions . says:

@TKBOMBER666 If you can shift it to any gear you may have this problem but
it also could be an internal transmission problem – take it in to a garage
as soon as you can or check the connection to the trans under the hood
yourself while a friend shifts it (engine off)

Icky Murray says:

I thank you sooo much for posting this video. I have a 2003 Sunfire and
this happened to me yesterday. I can move the gears back and forth, but my
car won’t move. I was thinking it was my transmission. Someone told me to
google linkage, but I tried YouTude instead and found your video. I like to
know a little something about my car when I visit the repair shop, so they
won’t make get something done I really don’t need. Thank you again. You
made my day:)

Kevin Robichaud says:

im waiting for my dad to get to my friends house, my shifter cable just
broke, duck tape would work right? hopefully

sparda1123 says:

03 cavalier here and just snapped the cable last night @ 120k miles im
looking at around 300 bucks to get it fixed through a shop. This is my
first and my last american car i will ever own i will say that.

Kalin Kolev says:

The easiest thing is to buy a NON American Made car. My gf’s Cavalier is
2000 with 150,000 miles on it and it is basically falling apart. She is
changing something every day.

carquestions . says:

@kevin199pastrana Tape won’t work – with two people helping, have one go
under the hood and move the lever on the transmission into drive while the
other person is sitting in the car with their foot on the brake to keep it
from moving. You should be able to get it home then.

aocriffraff2 says:

They same thing just happened to my 2004 cavalier. How do i fix this?

ThoroughbredDiva says:

Thanks for the video, very informative! Mine just broke on my 2003 Sunfire
coupe. GRRRRRRRRR….Im mad as hell!

carquestions . says:

@bamaproduction218 – special parts like this are usually only available at
a dealer – sorry

carquestions . says:

What happened to it?

lighttemp says:

03 Pontiac Sunfire 98k Miles. Shifter cable broke today. No recall yet.

carquestions . says:

@aocriffraff2 – It can be VIN specific and can only be had from your local
dealer – so get yourself down to the dealer – sorry – thanks for posting
and if you can make out a NHTSA complaint since in your case your car could
have rolled unexpectedly and killed or injured someone.
