It shouldn’t, there may be something hanging up in the system.
If the auto adjuster is off would it cause the break to catch fully like you had the break fully pressed even if your barely touching the brake pedal?
We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows this particular repair. If you have a Chiltons or a Haynes manual, it should show you how to make this repair.
How do you take the wheel cylinder out? I took of the screws holding it in place but I’m not sure if I just need to take off the bleeder screw or what. Unfortunately my bleeder screw is stripped, and I’ve tried vise grips and it still won’t take it out. How do I take it out?
You may have to back off on the brake shoe adjuster. There should be a hole (sometimes there isn’t) on the backside of the packing plate. There’s a little gear in there that puts tension on the brake shoes, turn the gear to release the tension with a flat head screw driver to loosen the pressure of the shoes against the drum and it should slide off for you. I have a ’99 cavalier 2.4 with 11,xxx miles and the parking brake and abs light is on together. This problem has stumped everyone I have talked to. Any idea on what the cause of these lights are?

Well after looking at the brakes, the setup is very different from what is on the video. Thankfully, the shoes still had more than enough life left on them so they did not need to be changed; they were just covered in brake dust so I cleaned them off and sanded the drums a little bit and they work just great with no squealing now.
The rear drum brakes on your Grand Am should be similar. You should be able to apply most of the basic procedures shown in this video to service your brakes.
Would this process work for an ’04 Pontiac Grand Am? I need to change my rear drums out and want to do it myself to save a bit of money. Thanks for all the great videos!

on some vehicles the adjuster hole may not be open from the factory. If you can turn the drum by hand you should be able to break it free with a hammer. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
My rear driver side drum won’t come off after trying to bang it off with a hammer. I’m assuming the shoes are the cause but I can’t find an adjuster hole on the back side. It’s a 96 cavalier… Any suggestions? Thank you

The drum should fit a little snug in the drum. Once you drive down the road they’ll adjust into place. There should be a little drag on them when you turn them by hand.
When you’re about to put the drum on, do you adjust that ”yellow piece on the bottom” so the drum would fit tightly or smoothly, in other words… does the drum have to be in tightly or a little loose?
The parking brake is in conjunction with the rear drums so the adjustment is combined in the two. If the e-brake cable is stretched, you may have to replace the entire cable.

You could, but those jackes are meant to be used in an emergancy situation. We would recommend using a more secure jack from an auto parts store.
i’m a total car n00b, so sorry if it seems a silly question. Can you use the same jack that comes in the trunk for your spare tire to change the brakes? I would think you could, but I’m a car n00b, so I just want to make sure.
