Yes its the same on a cavalier, but the automatic tranny has no dipstick,
it has a fill plug and the fluid is supposed to be filled to the bottom of
the plug, so fill it till it starts dripping out. When you service an auto
tranny you should run the tranny through all the gears manually and then
check the tranny fluid level while the engine is running and in park. Keep
in mind that when you check the fluid the car MUST BE LEVEL. You cannot
have only the front of the car on stands the car must be on four stands and
level.

When i do it i top off the fluid, start the car, run through all gears for
about 15 seconds each gear, put the car in park, let it run for a couple
minutes, and then top off the fluid.

Thanks for this resource Mike. As a mechanical engineering student at UT
Austin and long-time fabricator with many custom builds as well as repairs
behind me, I have learned the value of arming myself with as much knowledge
and information as possible before doing even relatively simple tasks such
as this half-shaft replacement. Your videos are a fantastic resource and I
hope others on the internet truly understand and appreciate what you are
doing for them with your videos. Take care!

Any grinding noise while braking is going to mean that you need to change
out the brake pads and possibly the rotors if they are out of round or
beyond the nominal thickness.

western1818 says:

Thanks for these videos. My 98 Chevy Cavalier is making a grinding sound
and jerks some when I slow down and turn right (it sometimes happens but
not all the time). The sound is coming from what seems the right front tire
area. Any idea of what this could be.

DaBossk says:

its a manual and there’s no dipstick? what should i do? its a geo metro if
that helps… do i have to drain all the old out and just replace it with
all new? what would you do? im trying to spend as little money as possible.
thanks!

1A Auto Parts says:

If it has an automatic transmission, you can check the transmission fluid
level when you’re done and top it off if it’s low.

@ericv1984 once the boot tears the axle failing usually isn’t to far
behind.Usually your better off replacing the axle like you decided to do.

1A Auto Parts says:

@ericv1984 There’s a product called a quick boot that will repair the one
that’s torn. We also carry new axles for this vehicle, if the axle had gone
bad and is making noise.1aauto.com/1A/Axleshaft/Pontiac/Sunfire/-/-/1996

My 1999 Sunfire sputters when turning on winding roads. Any ideas?

Alyssa Holtzman says:

The snap ring won’t come off. what would i do in that case?

1A Auto Parts says:

@letemrip32 You should be able to wiggle it a tad, and it should push right
back in for you.

Richy2316 says:

How can you tell or hear when you need to remplace a axel on a 98 chevy
cavalier

1A Auto Parts says:

@2253benjamin If you have the wheel jacked up off the ground it is not
under any spring pressure.

Jastarius says:

My 2001 Sunfire vibrates pretty excessively at 90 km/h, but either stops or
becomes less noticeable at higher speeds. I replaced a worn out tie rod end
on the passengers side, and it reduced the vibration a bit, but it is still
noticeable. Possible that it could be the CV joint/ drive axle on that
side? Or would it just maybe need an alignment?

1A Auto Parts says:

@gurabesusama They should stay in place when you slide the axel out.

1A Auto Parts says:

If the alignment was done correctly it shouldn’t pull to the left. You may
want to check the inner and outer tie rod ends, and also the swaybar
stabilizers to see if they need to be replaced. Hope this helps you out.

Eli W says:

@1aauto Putting the new CV Axel into the transmission of my 2000 3spd
Cavalier required considerably more force before it snapped into place.

1A Auto Parts says:

@ljatkins1 I would replace it so that it doesn’t get damaged.

1997 Cavalier 2.2/Auto transmission For the CV half shaft On the Specs from
1AAuto, …it says •”Buyer needs to transfer Inner Stub Shafts from the
original axles to replacement CV Axles”…WHAT AND HOW do you transfer the
inner stub shafts?

1A Auto Parts says:

@RSXKane You shouldn’t loose to much. If you have a clean bucket to catch
it in, you could always pour it back in, if you have an empty oil bottle
laying around.

nice video

1A Auto Parts says:

Hi Tony, We do not carry that particular part. You may want to see if you
can get one from your local salvage yard. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

1A Auto Parts says:

@bettaj It is a good idea to change the seal where the half-shalft enters
the tranny. You pry it out with a screwdriver and tap a new one back in. Be
careful not to scratch or damage the aluminum of the tranny.

thank you for the video I saved 200$

nice video, i have a problem with my 2003 sunfire automatic 2.2l. when i
turn right there’s a grind noise coming from the front end, took off wheel
and everything checks out. Torn between the wheel bearing or cv joint, any
thoughts? thanks

Eric Ver Linden says:

My half shafts don’t click when turning but I can feel some vibration in
the pedals as I drive the car. I was wondering if that’s the half shaft or
something else?

Patrick Orion says:

Do you guys sell gauges for a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire ? Been looking for one
everywhere, not even junk yards have any in stock.

bettaj says:

I did exactly what the clip says yet somehow my gear oil/tranny oil is
leaking. What do you suppose is causing this? I did not buy an OEM part for
my Toyota…it was at Advanced Auto. I think it drips from the point the CV
joint enters the Tranny. I have a MT Celica GT 99. Please give me your
thoughts. Thanks.

Mike could u please help me find a eng harness for a 1990 2.2 L4 its bad
with out the right harness the headlights wont come on now its runs great
ive look for shorts every where all fuses are good .

1A Auto Parts says:

You could try to turn the tire by hand to see if there’s any rubbing nose
coming from the front that you can hear.

Pablo Solis says:

hey i have a chevy cavalier 2002 ls sport and i get a kinda knocking sound
that comes out of that ball in the middle of the bar you just took out. can
anyone tell what that is?

1A Auto Parts says:

@TheLegendStrike It should be a vibration damper.

When I worked at a shop we had a pump on a 5 gallon bucket with a long hose
we used to fill manual transmissions and differentials, here in my home
garage I made a similar set up from a 10 dollar garden sprayer much faster
and easier.

djcon says:

Thanks for all the videos and help! I have a question for you! I’ve got a
2003 cavalier with 170000KM. Just today as I was sitting in my car, their
was a loud Pop/clunk noise from the front drivers side, and the car dropped
abit. The engine was off, I was parked. I tried turning the wheel back and
forth without moving and it kept making that pop/clunk noise. I pulled it
onto flat land, and measured and it dropped a whole inch only the drivers
side front. Do you know what it could be?

terminalfx says:

This past winter, I hit a curb at 10mph with the passenger side front
wheel. (04 Cavalier, 5 spd) I replaced the rim and both front wheel
bearings at this time, and had it aligned. Since then, the car makes a
rotational rubbing sound from the front end that only becomes audible above
20~25 mph, the sound goes away instantly when the clutch pedal is pressed..
The sound is proportional to the speed of the vehicle, not RPM-based. The
splines looked good on the CV axle when i replaced the bearings.

1A Auto Parts says:

You could check them by hand to see if there’s any play in them. You may
also want to check your other worn suspension pieces.

stingraystud says:

thanks this has been very helpful, i am changing the cv axles on a 2005
sunfire and thought there was a snapring or something holding it into the
tranny but its just a tight fit :-0 thanks very helpful

1A Auto Parts says:

@opsvideo2008 You do not have to drain the fluid it before. you do need to
have a catch pan ready, some may come out when you remove the axle.

DaBossk says:

is that tranmission fluid thats leaking out??? i just did mine and im
wondering if i have to top it off with some more tranny fluid? help plz!!!
