How to fix your no crank, no start, Pontiac Grand am the cheap way, right way and the fast way.

How to fix your no crank, no start, Pontiac Grand am the cheap way, right way and the fast way.

I have rebuilt enough of these cars to run into this problem more than a few times. When these cars were new, a new ignition lock was how I fixed it. As they got older, customers decided to save a few bucks on the repair and go with the method I will show you today. If you are having trouble with your GM Passlock 2 system, this repair will solve your problems but the color wires you are looking for may be a little different, if you don’t have a 99- 05 Grand am, 99-04 Alero, 97-04 Malibu or 97-04 Cutlass. They also used this system on the Impala, Monte Carlo, Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Express vans, just to name a few.

The resistance of the resistor you use must be between 1000 – 13000 ohms
If you are trying to match the original lock resistance, there is a 5% tolerance.

I said 1000-13000 ohm resistor, don’t worry about what is on the diagram, it is wrong.

I was by passing the theft on these back when these were still under warranty. Probably did 250 to 300. None ever came back with a no start, while other techs would have comebacks when they replaced parts. I use a 2.2K resistor, it puts the voltage right in the middle of spec the BCM expects to see.

I hardly ever see you messing with the 4 cylinder grand ams. Those are where it's at.

Robert Ebeling says:

Will this work for a 2005 Trailblazer? Having the same issue you showed in the video.

Great tip, Scott!

The Grand Am "King" and well deserved!

Steve Bauer says:

This also worked for me when I had to replace the BCM with a fresh junkyard unit.

compu85 says:

Hm, I didn't know the "newer" looking keys were still resistor based like the old PassKey ones.

Shad's Garage says:

Sure beats taking it to my local Pontiac dealer.

Avenger 1 says:

I do recall that GM had a recall on the ignition switch. Don't remember what the reason was for it.

HouseofNo says:

Exact opposite problem of modern KIAs and Stellantis Chargers and Challengers. Those cars have NO security and everybody wants them. Here we have Fort Knox digital security on cars (GM N bodies) nobody wants (is that what the N stands for on these cars?) because the thieves go after Camrys, Corollas & Honda Accords and Civic. Thank you for the video Scotty.

John Grant says:

great info , thanks

Wyatt Gardner says:

I had an 03 grand am. I bought it from a stealership in 2014 with 110k miles. I should've asked them to put it on a lift and looked under it. Body was full of bodo. Skip 2 yrs later and tire shop used 2×4 boards to get it up high enough to put used tires on it. A month later it started having this ignition issue. I just traded it in. Good riddance.
