I’m having an issue getting the bolts off of my thermostat housing. Could
you tell me what size socket you used? I read somewhere that the bolts are
8mm, but the socket slips slightly when I try to loosen with that, so maybe
that isn’t the right size.

Raphael Brown says:

I smack the bolts first with a center punch and a sledge hammer to break
free the rust. Then you make sure that your socket is not stripped out, try
an 8mm box end wrench.

Brickmaster2757 says:

NEVER run water only in your cooling system, no matter water season it is.

Great video Ralph, Just a couple questions for you. Do I need to disconnect
my battery? How high was your temperature gauge reading? Mine is ready very
high after 10 minutes of drive time………….like scary red. I hope you
can answer soon, I need to fix this problem

76chyanne says:

what the hell u aret saying much u instructions maybe what size bolts are
direction of stat ect

Raphael Brown says:

Assuming that you replaced the rubber gasket around the thermostat
correctly and placed the thermostat in the correct position to clear the
housing, I usually screw the mounting bolts alternately until housing is
flush, and then torque them down alternately as well.

Brickmaster2757 says:

You should have drained the cooling system first.

can you leave water in a 1998 sunfire for summer or should I put antifreeze
it . Does the water pump need antifreeze to lubricate it . Thanks. Hope you
can help.

Eric Ver Linden says:

Put the new one in exactly how the old one was, duh!

which was does it go in the flat to engine .

jrloopy1984 says:

does the flat side of the thermostat go on the hose side or engine side?

jrloopy1984 says:

Is the lower hose on the passenger side?

Chavez Anderson says:

I just replaced the thermostat on my 98 cavalier but after retightening the
bolts and after I started to add new coolent I still had a leak coming from
the bottom bolt area. Can you explain this ASAP, thanks a lot. Great video

littletoy01 says:

can you tell me how much antifreeze it holds thank . And how is it to bleed
the system because my bleeder valve is broke.

ASpamSandwich says:

If you’re in the red you need to park it asap. Me personally, I’d try
replacing the thermostat first since it’s the cheapest. Make sure to test
the old one by dropping it into a pot of boiling water to see if it opens
first. If it stays closed then it’s faulty and replace it.

Raphael Brown says:

You can run water, but antifreeze runs cooler and lubricates the water pump
better than just plain water. Plus, if you forget to put antifreeze in
before it freezes in the winter, you run the risk of cracking your block
and other things.

Raphael Brown says:

You should not have to disconnect your battery. My temp gauge was coming
very close to the red, while doing highway speeds. Replace your thermostat,
make sure your reservoir is filled up, and after you have done that, start
your car, let it idle for 15 mins, and make sure your cooling fan comes on
and goes off by itself. If it does not, you need a cooling fan motor also.
