I had the same problem on my 407 2.0L two years ago and I fixed it once for all in a simple and cheap way. The steering fluids that are sold by PSA and Total become foamy over time and start to leak from the pump. What I did was emptying the pump and filling it one inch above the "Max" level with ACDelco ATF TYPE III-H automatic transmission fluid (around $3). The steering has become noticeably lighter and more responsive. Plus: The ACDelco fluid never foamed or leaked, knowing that I live in Saudi Arabia where the average temperature in summer is 45°C.

Sounds good. My 407 is rather old, 2005, and increasingly difficult to steer. I had it checked where I live in Germany but mechanics detected no faults. Maybe I'm crazy but steering becomes significantly more difficult in winter, plus the cap of the "steering fluid well" is oozing something. WHAT IS THE CORRECT FLUID? IS THERE SOMETHING GENERIC? Cheers and thank you
