hello there, very good instructional video! I think the best I have seen so
far. Very detailed. Thank you.

I put 700mills of mineral water in mine…will it be ok?

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

no problem glad it helped

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

There is a lot of shared parts with the C5 and 406. They are well made
cars, ok the odd electrical issue here and there, nothing that cant be
fixed, and the acutal feel of the car is very solid. The old indirect
injection diesels are great for veg oil, youd need to get an old XUD
engined pug for that. Though coming from petrol cars i find the economy of
my car to be fantastic.

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

Thanks uncle frank. Glad to be of help, PC2CV i like that. As for the C5
ive never actually drove one, at the time i bought the 406 it was a choice
between it and the xantia, what are the C5’s like?

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

The HDi 90 as far as im aware is mostly the same engine, the exception
being is it has a solid flywheel, no intercooler and the gear ratios are
slightly different i think the procedure for getting to the thermostat
housing is the same as on the 110 engine, but the sensor itself is located
on the housing where the thermostat is held, ill PM you the diagram showing
the sensors location.

Uncle Frank says:

Love your videos PC2CV !! This one and your quick service tutorial for the
2.0 HDi were just what I needed when it came to carrying out the service on
my 110 C5 recently, your videos assisted me every step of the way, I would
have never found all those bleed nipples without this vid. Top marks m8
cheers

The clio is the only petrol car about the place, it needs the coolant
flushed at some point so i suppose i could change the thermostat aswell.
However there isnt much difference in the cooling system on a petol and
diesel engine they work in the same way.

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

Im not sure what the normal operating temperature for the SLK engine is,
try one of the mercedes owners clubs just to be sure, other owners will be
able to say what is normal. On the 406 it sits at 70-80 when driving easy,
if driven hard it will go up to but never above 90.

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

Either the thermostat is stuck, or its gasket is perished, i had a weep of
coolant which over a few days can lead to it being empty and then the car
overheating. If my car was overheating i would actually turn on the heater,
it seems strange but the heater actually takes heat away from the cooling
system. Although in all cases if the needle is pointing in the red stop the
engine to avoid damaging the engine. Is your car a citroen, what model is
it?

JforJesus says:

Drove and arrived at a mall, to see overheating and at 100C already on
Citrn. Red Stop flashing away. Left it for a long time and drove home with
no heater, con, and in neutral as much as possible , to cruise home. Wife
and kids concerned but had seen this before. Got home, fan on for 20min,
with water dripping out of Thermo housing. So assume its stuck in closed
position. Booted up PC and watched your vid. Great thanks a lot. Will strip
it out and leave it out, & get new one.May God bless you

thanx for you fast reply, apreciate it.

How do u keep ur engine clean ?

MadMax74656 says:

Incredible tutorial, very good,it would be great if you do similar service
on some petrol engines.Thanx for this video

RAPtorcek says:

Thank you for great tutorial.

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

Engine Degreaser Spray, and a few old rags. But with this car i
occasionally do give it a blast with the pressure washer, there are a lot
of sensors and electrics under the bonnet so be careful, then once cleaned
i blow away the water with the airline, and then let it dry with the bonnet
open before starting up. Once dried i spray some wd40 on any metal bits to
stop them rusting, and silicone spray on any rubber pipes.

Aidrian Wychwood says:

Really helpful. Thanks for going to all that effort. If only Haynes would
do a version of their manuals like that.

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

If you have a clean bucket to catch the coolant then you can reuse it, but
when you have went so far as to take off the thermostat its easy to flush
out the old coolant and replace it with new coolant. However regardless if
you use new or old coolant to fill it back up, the system does need to be
bled properly.

Hi, I have a 406 HDi 2.0 90 W reg. Im told by the greenflag geezer who
jacked me up and slid under that the coolant leak is coming from the
thermostat sensor septum/gasket/seal. i believe in my car this is
approached from underneath. would the protocol for changing be more or less
the same or should i really be going to a mechanic to deal with this
problem? Cheers -R

Great video

BillasLT says:

If i need change only thermostat, did i must change coolant too ?

shawnwwe says:

Great Video. I have a question. My Thermostat was stuck open, and the temp
level would only go up to 35-40 Celsius. And my car wouldnt heat up I got a
new thermostat with housing – opening at 100C. and new antifreeze. Now
before my original thermostat would go out, my engine temp would reach 90
degrees and would stay there steady. Now with the new thermostat, the car
temp level goes up to 95-97 degrees Celsius. sometimes its goes between
90-97 degrees. Is that normal? i drive a 2005, slk 350

Uncle Frank says:

So far so good with the citroen c5. Possibly not too dis-similar to its
peugeot cousin, nice comfy ride and seems to be built like a tank. Little
bit higher on running costs than I initially anticipated, however I did
move from a 1.7 vauxhall corsa b diesel that I ran on straight veg oil for
years, so going back to the forecourts for fuel was going to hit me hard
whatever the vehicle. keep the good vids coming dude.

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

Thanks

peugeotCitroen2CV says:

Thanks for the comment.

tisbris says:

Hi, great tut. Would it be possible to change termostat without draining
the system first? Off cause some coolant would be spilt, but maybe a quick
change is ok?

James Hickey says:

That is a great video, really clear and comprehensive. Thank you very much.
