Peugeot’s sluggish “07” period has given way to a new era of deliciously detailed masterpieces. Yet, slow sales indicate the buyers who lost interest during the 207/307/407/607 years aren’t coming back.
408 GT PHEV couples a 1.6L turbo 4, an electric motor powered by a small 12.4kWh battery, and an 8-speed automic to power the front wheels. 165kw/360Nm pushes 408 to 100kph in a briskly-leisured 7.8 seconds. While that may not peel your face off, it is more than enough to get up to highway speed to get where you’re going in a stylishl-yet- bougee kind of way.
Matrix LED headlights are framed by dramatic DTRL/indicator lamps that slash across the bumper, yet the front is surprisingly blunt for the crossover-fastback-saloon. It sits a mere 198mm off the ground and has the faintest whiff of SUV-coupé about it. There more than a passing resemblance to sister brand’s CX2500 in its graceful roofline. There is a gentle arc over the passenger’s heads terminating at the lip of the electric hatch.
The word du jour is chic.

I love the external design of this car, internal design is beautiful. The screens look well designed and efficient and the driving experience looks brilliant. As a town car you’d use very little petrol as battery range looks okay for short commutes. I’d love to see this design produced as a full EV! Years ago I drove a Peugeot 604, a beautiful car in its day, albeit mine was a bit old and cranky at the time I owned it. This car looks like a wonderful successor, well designed and good to drive. I’m not a fan of hybrids and prefer full EV’s, but could live with this as a second car, that’s for sure. Thanks for an informative and interesting review.
Enjoy your reviews and good to see appreciation for French approach. Love this car and sister Citroen C5-X even more so. Wanted to buy the C5-X, but deal breaker is the average stereo quality. I've been informed aftermarket upgrade not available. No rear seat armrest is irksome in these two cars too. Please fix this Peugeot/Citroen so I can buy one.
