If you have ever wondered if you would be a good therapist, there are actually a number of things to consider. There is a body of research that looks at the ‘person of therapist,’ to see what qualities and strengths seem to matter. These lines of research have pointed to things like humility (also known as ‘professional doubt’…a finding that has emerged from the ‘supershink’ research), strong language skills, emotional expressiveness, persuasiveness (coming out of Tim Anderson’s research on ‘facilitative interpersonal skills’), among other traits like self-awareness. There is a lot to consider, but in the end a good therapist will need a balance of strong emotional and cognitive capacities. That being said, no one is perfect, and it is important to remember that excellence in all of the described domains is not a prerequisite for being a good therapist (if it were, we’d have no good therapists!!). Still, it is useful to explore these areas so we can honestly reflect on whether a profession as a therapist would be a good fit.
