Front end looks to be from a 1980 model. I had one.

I had a 1983 Olds Delta 88, 4-door sedan. I bought it used, with 82K on the odometer. I had it tuned up, new plugs & wires, tires and shocks installed and it purred. Ice cold A/C. The paint was really thin in places, it had been driven through car washes a lot which was really hard on the paint on cars of that era. I enjoyed the car for what it was, a rather luxurious family car with somewhat bland exterior styling, a spacious, quiet interior, sinfully comfortable "pillowed" seats, and a soft, pliant ride. Really light, numb steering, and you had to be ready to get on the brakes in heavy traffic because it was a big, heavy car and it was easy to lock up the brakes. After driving it for several years I (foolishly) had the transmission flushed, and the rear seal promptly began leaking. I had the transmission rebuilt, but it never shifted correctly after that and the place that did the rebuild claimed they couldn't duplicate the issue. I eventually traded the car in but I have often wished I had taken the car somewhere else to get the transmission sorted out and kept it. You don't see these on the roads any more and they really are great looking cars. I think the grill is from a 1980 model, but you can probably find the inserts for the correct year on eBay if that's important enough to you. Otherwise, if they're not cracked I'd just use them as-is.

Cool 88 bro

You can always change the grille pieces. That front fascia was used from 1980 to 1990. Also, two battery trays mean It was from a diesel for sure. They needed 24 volts to start it.

@joeyheller2995 says:

Sweet car, that is a 1980 Delta grill they used the thin slots. I don’t think it was a Diesel because it would say it on the hood ornament. Looking forward to part two!!!

No, that's exterior paint code 62 Light Briar Brown. I have the same car, but mine is an '84 Royale Brougham (yours is a plain Royale). Yes, that front end is from an earlier model, around 1980-1981 or so. The grille on a 1984 is different. 1984 and 1985 are the only two years with the split red/amber taillights like that. The Royale Brougham LS had a solid red/red taillight/turn signal, but the Royale and Royale Brougham had the amber/red in 1984-1985.

Your car has the RPO code "MV9" THM200 non-overdrive transmission which is a notorious trouble spot. The RPO code "MW9" THM200-4R four speed overdrive (as mine has) is a better transmission.

KEEP IT. They are beautiful., It's a 1980 front end, the 84 had a larger grille. We had a 1984 Olds 98 Regency Brougham, it was a great car and beautiful too, however the C Convertor went out, and the transmission went after 10 years.. It was our last Olds..

Anything GM from about 1975 up to 90 (I think) all had the big HEI distributor…

A regular points setup was only available until maybe late 1974.

It's nice that it's a Coupe… They were rare even when new.
I haven't seen one in person for over thirty years!

@kingbrod1 says:

Yeah that front grill is from an earlier 80s model. I had 2 Ninety Eights,'83 and '84 and one Delta 88..'84. Bought it from an old lady,who had it changed from diesel to a 350,and man that thing would MOVE! LOL! Black with the maroon interior. I had some 50 series Flow Masters put on(no cats after engine swap) and was growling down the streets so sweet.

I think the front clip is 1981
Grill looks 81 to me
