1996 Oldsmobile Ciera Timing Chain noise

My car is making a rattling sound from the front near the serpentine belt area. I believe it’s the timing chain. To the best of my knowledge, that chain has …

Does that mean that you have to fix the engine in your car?

Chris Schulz says:

I generally notice it most while idling, cold or not. More so when cold. I
have read bad things about this engine in particular, but so far, I haven’t
experienced many issues at all. Thank you for your input.

RedHeart64 says:

If you do run it without the belt… GM cars are notoriously sensitive to
running without the water pump going. If you hear the noise when the engine
is cold, I’d wait until it’s cold and then try it.

RedHeart64 says:

Have you tried taking loose the main belt and starting it (run it only for
a couple of minutes at most so you don’t damage the engine)? I’ve heard
rattling like that from a bad pulley (I don’t remember what sort of car it
was on). It also sounds a little like pinging…

Chris Schulz says:

It would be considered internal engine work. You have to remove the front
cover of the engine. The most difficult part would be removal of the
harmonic balancer. Thankfully this was not the source of my problem.

Chris Schulz says:

I can try those things. I plan to flush out the cooling system and replace
the water pump around that time. Another thing I plan to do is replace the
spark plugs. My goal is to keep it running and in service as long as
possible.

Chris Schulz says:

This car recently has had major service done on it. The sounds turned out
to be much more serious than timing chain problems. The transmission failed
while driving one day not long after this video was made. I had it
completely rebuilt and replaced the MAF sensor. It is running well now.
