How Would You Fix This Rotted Out Nissan?

How Would You Fix This Rotted Out Nissan?

In this video I bring you along as I look at a customers 2015 Nissan Altima that came in on a tow truck. A quick inspection reveals a rotted and broken rear lower control arm and the one on the other side is only moments away from snapping off too. We always have to look at the big picture here in the rust belt so sometimes replacing a control arm is not that easy. In this case I am ordering a whole new rear cradle with both knee assemblies from a place out of Alabama. In the end I think it is the better deal. I’d like to hear what you think or know how you would handle this.

I am extra glad, given the current state of the overpriced auto industry these days, that I no longer live in the Northeast and don’t have to watch the cars that I can no longer afford to replace melt into a pile of brown crusty dirt anymore!

Stanward Oshiro says:

Poor car. It’s only a 2015 and it has that sort of damage.

Eric H says:

Good lord the amount of cancer on that car for being as young as it is…. Good lord

Mr JSV says:

Stunning amount of rust. I think it's worth fixing, the car is less than 10 years old and probably otherwise still in good condition.

Apple Sauce says:

I'd leave the Nissan in the PRNY any buy a new car to put in a new garage in a southern state.

Brown Green says:

People can prevent this by squirting drain oil on the underbody. My 95 Ford Contour is rock solid yet here in the salt belt of N. Wisconsin.

Mark Bennati says:

They way some of these subframes and suspension rust away it’s a wonder that more manufacturers don’t make their parts out of aluminium

C W says:

Rust Never Sleeps!

Dr Diabeetus says:

With how rusty everything gets in the rust belt, I don’t know why more people don’t use rust prevention under coating. It would take 40+ years of neglect for a car to look like that here in CA, and that Altima is a 2015!?

guerro327 says:

Need to jack up the radiator cap and drive a new car underneath. Fixed.

The Player's Vault says:

That rear cradle. What a rust bucket! It's time to bring out the rust remover, painters.

D Pyles says:

Informative video. Thx

John Miller says:

It's a Nissan, I wouldn't fix it.

Paul Sullivan says:

Holy crap Batman! But Eric O can fix it….if the parts are available from down south.

ToughAncientSpark says:

Actually the body looked like it was in pretty good shape and it only has 109k on the odometer.
Probably doesn't owe any money on it.
As long as engine and transmission are good, it'll be a keeper for a while.

LEX Maximaguy87 says:

these days save this pig….

FixItLinc says:

Happy Birthday Mrs. o

ToughAncientSpark says:

Same kind of thing happened when I had my 2008 Buick LaCrosse.
It needed new tie rods. My local shop told me that it would actually be cheaper to replace the whole sub assembly which included new ball joints also.
Replacing the sub assembly took alot less time and effort than trying to replace just the tie rod ends saving more on labor than the extra the part cost!

Half Fast Garage says:

Happy Birthday Mrs. O-mazing!

Alex S says:

Call a wrecker and send that car to the crusher

Glen Harper says:

Now that would make a cool video.

Thai Nguyen says:

I’d probably swap the subframe and control arms too

David Campbell says:

Happy belated Birthday Mrs. O.

Xombi Xombi says:

Mr. O has decided not to feed faithless attorneys who will sue him into poverty over his trying to save a bit of pice for his customer, should a partial replacement fail. All for the price of 1.5 control arms from Nissan. That is an imaginative solution that is a win for the customer and the shop that backs the work.

Alexander Riccio says:

The hell with fluid film, you need to use cosmoline in NY!

robert hawkins says:

happy birthday Mrs. Eric o.

huzudra says:

While the frame may be on studs don't expect it to just come down. I've done a few Nissan/Infinti FLCA's that were on studs and I had to torch out the bushings and use a puller on the sleeves or slit the sleeves to get them off the studs. Not incredibly terrible but highly annoying.
