After seeing some posts that a starter replacement solved this issue, I
replaced my starter on My 2002 Mitsubishi eclipse with apprx 103,000 miles
on it, but the noise still has not gone away, Anybody have any ideas? The
noise goes away at higher rpm usually above 2k, loudest at or around
700-800 rpm.. The engine light has never come on during this entire time.
Timing belt, water pump and all other belts were replaced about 7 months
ago. I occasionally get squealing from the belts at start up. Took the car
to o’ Riley auto part for them to put the engine code checker on the car
but nothing came up. The oil was 3/4 of a quart low so auto store rep put
in a 3/4 of a quart of a slightly thicker oil in the engine 10W-30 to see
if the noise would stop. Noise still not going away. Any suggestions?

My eclipse also does this, I recently changed the timing belt and it was
running ok for a month, then the grinding noise started. I figured out that
the noise originates from the cylinder head near the firewall.. either that
head is out of time or maybe could be a piston that is messed up.. I
checked the trouble codes and got P0300 it says that there are some
cylinders that are misfiring. what puzzles me is the fact that, once the
engine warms up it goes away, i think that this happens because at higher
temps the metals are able to flex. Pls reply if anyone finds a solution
Thank You

Hi, so was anybody able to figure it out? I have the same issue. Usually at
1500rpm.

Zachary Minium says:

It is indeed the starter not returning to the correct position. It has
nothing to do with the engine. Change the starter problem solved.

Jeff Joos says:

My 2004 dodge stratus has the same issue. I have to wonder from the
starter comments if maybe the starter bendix is hanging up while cold and
the noise is the overrunning clutch on the starter.

Brent simon says:

mine make a light verison of that but it goes away idk lol

Devin Koebel says:

oh right on, well keep checking this vid, my instructor and i are working
on finding the reason and solution for the problem. Would be nice to know
anyway.

Jose aguilar says:

Did you just do ur timing belt before noise started?

Charlie Peace says:

I sold it because I bought that green jeep in the video.

Devin Koebel says:

Did anything major happen just before you sold it? or did you sell it just
incase something were to and you didn’t want to have it when it did?

omar covarrubias says:

CAN YOU FIX THE PROBLEM? WATH IS? I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY ECLIPSE
04,ITS SOMETHING WITH THE ENGINE? THNX

shizster37 says:

I have an 03 eclipse GT. same color actually. I have had mine for about 7
years and has done that since the day I bought it. I did some research on
it and I have heard a variety of things. From adjusting the lash adjusters
to changing the type of oil. even though it sounds awful it has never
affected my engine at all. After it warms up it runs fine.

Daniel Genton says:

my 01 does the same.i didnt know wht.now im happy to know they all do that.

Charlie Peace says:

No thing bad happened at all. It ran perfect other than that start up
sound. I sold

Johnny Dula says:

This noise stopped when I changed my starter. I know it doesn’t make sense
but it stopped the noise all together.

XxDash2coldxX says:

mines make that noise now however it wont move when I put it into any gear
smh

Charlie Peace says:

I ended up selling the car. Never found a solution for it. I can’t say I’ll
ever buy one again…

Cornell strickland says:

I have a dodge stratus coupe (cousin model) with the same noise

Devin Koebel says:

Any news on it? My instructor thinks it is an issue with the oil pressure.
He believes if i put a thicker oil in the engine it will take longer for it
to drip down to the oil pan and keep it lubed. Maybe its just a dry start
up and oil is not circulating quick enough due to low pressure? So i did an
oil change today and added a thicker adative to it. Ill let you know if the
problem disappears. Also Mitsubishi dealerships i went to claim this noise
is not a common problem.

jr042379 says:

I had this same problem on my 02 gt, and decided to ignore it because it
seems like a lot of people have the same noise issue. Over the weekend, my
starter went out, and after changing the starter I haven’t heard the noise
since. Could be the issue, maybe? Doesn’t make sense to me, but not hearing
it anymore
