The second thing is to look at the new parts and see what type of top they
have one them. Typically they will have a more common top piece like a hex
head or common size nut. My point of saying this is that if you are stuck
using a locking pliers to get the OLD struts off and they get mauled up,
then no harm done because you are going to chuck them anyway. Or you could
file the tops square like we did in the video so that a more common tool
will “fit” on top.
The first thing I would suggest is to try and find the “strut spanner” tool
that the service manual references using. I would tell you the tool number
but I don’t have my manual anymore (since I don’t have the car anymore).
It’s possible you could borrow a tool like that from your local parts store
that borrows tools. Continued in next post…
Yes, you have a point. But when it comes time for me to put the new strut
on, I don’t want to damage it. I’ll try looking for the strut spanner.
These things are hard to find in your local auto parts store.
I imagine they are very similar and this video will give you the visuals to
help understand the process. But I would still want a reference to the the
individual vehicle. A Haynes Manual, or an online manual like alldatadiy is
worth every penny. (and then some)
thanks! I have a 2002 Galant. With the exact same suspension. Had been
planing to change it for a while, but was slightly intimidated by the
complexity. Watched this, got some balls, and went and did it all in 30
mins per side. Amazingly its a very simple job which you could do in your
drive way. Garage wanted to charge me 150 bucks per side for time and
works. Thats a neat 300 saved, thanks to you!
I have a 1999 mirage with the same kind of strut, NAPA gave me a universal
strut nut remover. This does not work because the adapter will not fit on
top. I was recommended to use pliers but I heard that it can damage the
shaft. So what can I do?
Where can i find that socket piece that you used to hold one and turn the
other oooor where can i find that rounded wrench you were talking about?
I feel for ya, I couldn’t easily find that spanner tool either. That’s why
I ended up using that “trick” with the 3/8 socket and the file.

Would these strut repairs also be the same for the Eclipse?
