Troubleshoot and Diagnose a Mercury 135 Outboard

This is the first in a series of videos I am making about this project boat. In this video, I take a first look at a Mercury 135 motor that does not run. I did a thorough check up on this motor and I believe found the problem.

Download the free service manual here: https://www.downloadboatmanuals.com/motors/mercury/

I’m learning as I do this, so if you have any helpful info along the way as you watch me work on this motor, I would be happy to hear it.

If you are enjoying these videos, or would like to suggest a lake for me to review, please let me know in the comments, or email me at: rande@gomidwestfishing.com

Did you make a video with the fuel pump on this motor. I have the same but a 96. I’m having issues with fuel. Also the choke.

Check the reed valve

Harlan Mote says:

Sea foam it,and get the deposits off of the heads of the pistons. It will run better.

Rande….The starboard side is a bit too sloppy and the rings might be stuck but the scoring indicates a lack of oil and or carbon build-up sticking the rings…..Something else to consider…..Some one might have tried to bore it on the starboard side already and subsequently you're getting blow-by and this is causing the no compression. Also note that pistons usually have arrows on the top that designate the exhaust side….The pin side is the intake side. You may be able to bore it but expect that you may have to sleeve the block with more expense. This model pre-mixes before it's ignited so I don't think this occurred in the carb. Until you can look at the block there is not a lot you can tell about the piston and rings. This could also be the result of a cold start and not letting the engine properly warm up….If I could see more I might be able to pick up more….Sea Ya!!
