Replacing the tilt trim motor on a 2002 Mercury 90 hp outboard

As newbie boat owners (back in 2001) we didn’t know to change out the zincs and the trim motor housing rusted out over the last 14 years.

Changing out the motor and motor housing was pretty easy and here’s a shout out to marineengine.com for their site and service. I received the parts three days after I ordered them, and the site allows you to search by your engine’s serial number. They also provide schematics for each motor system. Tell them I sent you and maybe they’ll give me free stuff, who knows.

Don’t forget to lock the engine in the up position using the tilt stop arm or chain it up before you start. And I’m not a mechanic, I just play one on YouTube.

Thanks for this video. I built a special tool ( #5 socket attached to a #five allen key, after cutting the curved handle off and an extention) that allowed me to remove the four allen screws. This cut a lot of time. The only issue I ran into was the wiring, So I spliced the new wires into the old wires so I wouldn't have to pull them through the engine. Once its installed I did the fill /bleed, zip tie and your ready to roll.

I tried this but I was unable to remove the unit from the engine.

Here`s a tip if you see a tube of GOO PRODUCT Theres Shoe goo ,, Marine Goo , Pool Goo many more find some Marine Goo They are in a toothpaste tube container hardware stores sell it Canadian product However using gloves spread Marine Goo all over the trim motor housing ELIMINATES this forever it`s like a plastic cast over top and stays hard till you remove it by doing a cut down the side like an egg shell .I added some of this to my lid for a sealent 15 yrs ago never had to open it again .

I cracked the reservoir housing of a brand new motor, I think by overfilling it. What is the correct procedure to replace the hydraulic fluid? VERY expensive mistake.

Gogle Plus Sucks says:

Thanks for making and posting this video, very good. I was wondering if you did any diagnostics on the motor after you removed it? And, if you had long enough allen wrenches, could you remove the motor without taking the whole assembly off? (not that cleaning up the pins wasn't a good idea anyway)

I am trying to remove the Mercury 150-horsepower trim motor, but when I raise it by hand, the trim stops halfway up and stops.
Even after removing all hydraulic oil, stop halfway up.
Do I need to switch manually? Is there any other way ??
