I agree. One of the best videos on this subject. Makes me want to get out there and do my Merc. 9.8 which has been sitting for quite a while. Wasn’t really using it anyway but I’ll find a purpose.

olebiker says:

You saved me a lot of money by making this video. Thank you for going to the trouble to do it.

Steve O says:

Great video on youtube on changing impellers

Ronald Evans says:

Can you help me in disconnecting a VRO system on a 1998 bigfoot mercury 60hp outboard? I do not believe it is working, the alarm is sounding and is not smoking.

Kevin, I did mine today. The bolts are in different areas, but procedure is the same

335i101 says:

Kevin Knox….great question….I was going to ask the exact same one (you even got my model year correct 😉

sirtackalot says:

Great Video! I had to laugh on another video when the Face Seal Setting Tool was left on the shaft.

My question is the on the Face Seal. Does the flair of the Face Seal push against the top of the housing or slip into the gap between housing and shaft. I ask this because it appears that my old one with a smaller flair (perhaps it was worn) was slipped into the gap between shaft and housing. Which is correct?

Kevin Knox says:

Awesome video, Do I use the same procedure for a 1991 150hp Black Max?

Gary Cochran says:

fantastic video, great job.

Brianna Berinobis says:

BEST video on youtube about impellers. I have a question for you since you know what you are talking about! I have a 2000 mercury 125 that is extremely hard to start. And it will start up after it has been running but if i fish for about 30 minutes, it is hard to start all over again. Is there a trick to starting it that I am not aware of or is this something else? Thanks for your time!

spthurston says:

Thank you so much for the feedback! I have the seals and I am going to replace them, I’ll also check the pressure. You’re too kind

Larry Barber says:

When applying silicon should I let it get tacky before putting back together or should I do it wet/tacky? Then how long should I let it dry before running it? Thanks, the video was the bomb for me, saved me mucho dollero!!

OutboardAdvice says:

Remove the propeller and have a look for any signs of fishing line behind the prop. The gear shift shaft seals are usually the cause for water in the gear oil on those boxes in my experience. The only true way to find out is to pressure test the gearbox. Can you get hold of a pressure tester and/or vacuum tester? The gearbox should hold 15psi pressure and 15 inmg vacuum.

Also check that your gear oil drain screw washers are in good condition. They should be replaced when changing gear oil.

OutboardAdvice says:

Yes is the same procedure for the gear shift 🙂

Thanks :)

one of the best IF not the best vid’s on changing a water pump … Great Vid Mate from the US!!

spthurston says:

Wow this video was absolutely fantastic. Thank you! I have a 1990 115 HP and I was wondering what may cause water to get in the lower end? Anything I can do on my own to fix this? Someone suggested changing the seals that are behind the prop, is there anything to this? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

MyPoopoo2 says:

ay mate good video keep em cummin! i have a 89 200hp mercury. was wonderin if its the same process to remove lower unit on that in terms of the gear shift selector? you should do a video on replacing the lower unit seals that would great cheers mate.

OutboardAdvice says:

It will have a long nut, and a locking nut. Make sure when installing the gearbox you put the nut back in exactly the same position as this adjusts the gearshift.

If it doesn’t have that, it will have a linkage under the carburettor that you disconnect.

OutboardAdvice says:

Thanks mate… All outboards are very similar yes. The only real difference is how many bolts (and where they are) that hold the gearbox on. I think from memory your motor will have four bolts, and a nut at the front.

The other difference is the gearshift. The 90 in the video has a splined gearshift. Your motor will need the gearshift disconnecting to remove the gearbox. I think your gearshift disconnects above the gearbox at the front of the motor. Look for a shaft that is threaded…..

Great video my friend, very informative. Tell me, I have a 15HP Mercury (bought brand new in 2000) on my 14 foot John Boat. Is this basically the same set-up for changing the water pump?

Rebel Boxer says:

Thanks for the reply.
Going to tackle this over a 3-4 day time frame. (heat, pb blaster, tap w/rubber mallet…. let sit, repeat) I’ve been known to break things when I get frustrated, so gonna take my time. I may even come up with my own “spreader” tool using turnbuckles and wood that will fit between the “fins” (I have a 7 1/2 inch gap, so a normal wood wedge is not working). There is absolutely NO gap to get anything in there yet. Give me 1/16 and I’ll slam dunk it.
Thanks agn 4 your rply

OutboardAdvice says:

Usually is is caused by corrosion build up around the studs that hold the gearbox on. Or the locating dowels. I have had one that was so tight I had to heat the gearbox so much that the paint needed repairing. LPG is good as it isn’t as hot as acetylene. It may not get it hot enough to remove though. You can carefully wedge a very sharp object between the mating surfaces. The best place is at the front, and at the back. I have a razor sharp scraper that tapers thicker.

Rebel Boxer says:

Mark, I’ve got the same engine, same problem. How did you resolve the problem. Thanks

Philip Ko says:

Terrific instructor. U must be a professional marine mechanic.

mordeth141 says:

awesome vid!!!! but yea disconnect the battery first!!!

eldorado96 says:

Great video – very helpful to understand the relative simplicity of this job.

Only one nit to pick (sorry!): You commented a couple of times on “keyway”, but were referring to the key itself. The keyway is only the slot in which the key installs.

Other than that, we get what you meant. Thanks for posting this!

littlemiffedmuffet says:

dont forget to remove the spark plug boots from the spark plugs and ground them safley somewhere away from the plugs. you now still own your hands.then begin removing the lower end

Clint Cox says:

I have a Merc 250 Optimax. Same procedure? Thanks for the video.

Bethany Smith says:

Nice video clip. It saved me money taking it in to the shop.

Will this work for a 150 ? I gave a merc 2.5litre black max

rplowden says:

Any advice on getting a stuck lower off? I have the 2003 125hp with all 5 nuts off and it won’t budge. Motor is clean and doesn’t look like there’s any corrosion. Am I missing something?
