i looked at my filter about 4 years ago and it had completely dissolved. I freaked out, couldn't find any pieces anywhere. Luckily, it didn't cause any engine problems. replaced the filter material with some motorcycle air filter material. no problems afterthat.

I like the idea of a filter on an outboard. It's too bad a good filter wasn't used from the beginning. Mercury should have done this with a recall and provided a new filter for nothing in my opinion.
