Customer brought in a boat that was overheating, and upon opening we quickly noticed that the impeller and housing were completely melted. This is caused when the engine is fired up without a water supply. (dry rubber on metal creates friction, thus melting any plastic and rubber in the surrounding area) The impeller still rotates regardless if the engine is on neutral or in gear!
An impeller should be replaced at least once a year, or more often if the boat isn’t used.

good video! Some more detail on getting the shift shaft lined up with the sleeve would be great…mine always fights me on this and its very difficult solo.
