I just did this job on my crown vic and I used a 1 inch floor flange gas fitting from the hardware store and a 50 mm M6 bolt (& nut) also I used the cup washer from the top of the front shock absorber. The flange covers the field coil just right and the hole clears the pulley shaft nicely. I also the shock cup washer to press the pulley in to place with the help of a 1 inch electrical lock nut (also from the HW store)

Thanks for the Video. I rented a tool kit to remove the a/c clutch assembly off my car. Could not figure out how to remove the central nut to the pulley,even with the 30 odd pieces to the kit. Read the instructions as a last resort. It said ‘first remove center nut off shaft”, me and my friend died laughing. Used pry bar like u did, thanks again.

Hey Great Video, helped me out a lot when doing mine. Had trouble getting the clutch on after I installed the coil. I had tapped on the coil using a small hammer. I then had a heck of a time trying to get the pulley on….long story short…a fresh set of eyes led to the realization that the coil wasn’t sitting exactly square and the pulley wasn’t able to go on. The fix was to use a screw driver to slightly pry the bottom out, she then went on fine.

How muck was your clutch. and what about the little washers where do they go. Do they go in the middle before installing the last peace of the clutch. I have a lincoln where the whole ac compressor locked up I installed another compressor and redid the whole process that comes with a new ac system..could the problem been fixed by just replacing the clutch?

The washers in this case are “spacer” washers. When the clutch is not engaged the two parts will be held apart by light spring tension. There will be an air gap between the two surfaces. The amount of space in this air gap is controlled by how many spacer washers we add.
When the electromagnet is engaged it will attract the two sides of the clutch and force them together causing friction and eventual lockup. This is how to clutch starts the compressor turning.

It would be easier to get to and work on. Although you would let all the r134a or freon out of the system and would have to get it recharged. Thats why i did not remove it.

I just used a hammer. They say you can file the shaft on the compressor to get it to fit. But i did not have to… Can you get a micrometer on the compressor shaft and the inside of the new clutch? Try using a lubricant with the install and make sure that you press fit it straight on. Not of canter. Besides that i don’t know. What brand of new clutch do you have?
