Mercedes W204 C Class Transmission Service ATF Fluid Oil Change 7GTronic 722.9 Test 0-60 mph

A video of how I performed the automatic transmission fluid change and oil cooler flush. Improvisation was the name of the game. Also a 0-60 mph run of 6.30s…

So I was going to ask about how to fill the Torque converter, but I read
all the comments and see you answer that. I did believe that the tc and
transmission are not sharing fluid, but you state otherwise. Im interested
in how this happens. Also, when filling the trans. how is this done
without creating a lot of pressure? You do not mention anything about
relieving the pressure my any means and nowhere else have I heard about
this being a problem, so Im wondering where/how the air escapes when being
displaced by the oil.

Hi Scott, just watched this guide, and would like to thank you as I need to
change the oil on my auto transmission. I would just like to ask a couple
of questions if it’s ok, when you flush the oil cooler do you temporarily
fit the transmission sump to catch the oil hence using the temporary bolts
? and the second is more a suggestion, once you have initially drained the
transmission sump (after having knocked up the overflow pipe inside the
sump) then leaving the sump attached with the original bolts could I not
then disconnect the oil cooler pipe and flush the cooler then remove the
sump and empty the remaining contents, remove the old filter refit new
filter, gasket, bolts etc. etc

Subb’d! Brilliant guide!

DAVID ROSE says:

Hi again Mr Scott , where did you purchase the Titan AFT 4134 ? and how
much .
Thanks in advance cheers Dave

ABDUL HASEEB says:

Great video !! Wanna ask you one thing, where you joined thermometer wire
in transmission?

Dustin S says:

Great Video ! Need to do this in the spring. Just wondering if i could pay
you to make a drain and fill tool you designed for this job for me?

Paddy Finn says:

Excellent guide! Thanks for taking the time to prepare and share this!

Great video Scott… I’ll be changing the ATF on a 2012 C350 based on your
instructions. One question. Why was it the case that you were able to drain
so much ATF through the drain plug initially before knocking off the
overflow pipe? Is this because the engine was not running at that time and
the oil settles into the pan? If so, it shows the necessity of topping off
while running and at temp, which is interesting in it’s own right.

Thanks, Chris J, Los Angeles, CA

Yes, my gearbox is a 722.902, coupled to om642 engine on the C klasse W203
320cdi 2006 model year.
I made this hand pump to drain my gearbox,
http://mercedes-benz.forumactif.com/t84891-outil-remplissage-boite-auto-7229xx
it is french language, but you can see the pictures on the forum, to
understand
Thank you

Sirghi Vladimir says:

Hi, i leave in France, here to change the transmission fluid costs 380 euro.
I want to make by my self the oil change.
The WIS says to fill in 2 steps:
– the first one: you fill 6L of oil.
after that engine is running and after shifting the gears, the engine
should stop
– second one: if you drained the torque converter you must add 4L of oil
(total 6+4=10L of oil in the gearbox, before to make the oil level )
: in case if you didn’t draine the torque converter you
must add 2L of oil (total 6L+2L+xL=yL of oil in the gearbox before to make
the oil level)
and you didn’t took into account those quantities, didn’t you had technical
problems
How did you connect the multimeter to measure temperature? I have an
infrared laser thermometer to measure the temperature of the oil pan
Thank you for answering

Stephen thanks for the kind words. I’m very flattered. Have a read of the
description of the video as I’ve added some information. If you like you
can take the exhaust bracket off at the rear of the transmission and lower
the pan and pull it back to remove. Or you can take both the exhaust
bracket off and the front tubular bracket if you want even more room. My
transmission is still running beautifully. As it was an easy job and only
cost $100 I’ll do it more frequently so the tranny lasts.

Great video!

MrScott52 says:

The gearboxes are all very similar. what model W204 do you have? If it’s a
V6 petrol it will have a 722.9?? box like mine. If it’s 4 cylinder it may
have the 722.6?? 5 speed auto.

MrScott52 says:

Thank you for your kind comments. Well if you don’t flush the oil cooler
and the lines you will leave some old ATF in the system that can
contaminate the new ATF. It’s probably not a big problem if you don’t do
it. I like doing these things properly and flushing some fresh ATF through
the oil cooler was quite easy so I thought it was worth doing. kind
regards, Scott

Cezar K says:

I cannot see how do you fill up the torque converter Mr.Scott What I know
is that torque converter don’t share the oil with transmission cause is
between engine and transmission. You just top up oil cooler and
transmission.I have to recognize that the video is very good and for MB 7G
the best I have found on Youtube .

MrScott52 says:

Thanks Mike. I’m flattered you believe it’s the best video on this subject.
The engine cross member is probably the same thing I mention in the video.
On the W204 C320D the oil pan needs to be lowered at the front and then
pulled forward. The rear tranny support is slightly over the pan I have a
2011 WIS and found nothing on 700ml first. It said after draining the TC
and draining, removing and cleaning the oil pan and installing filter, to
pump 6 litres into the transmission. I put about 7 in.

MrScott52 says:

Mike. The cross member MB are referring to is probably the bracket that
connects to the exhaust. If you remove that and the front tubular bracket I
referred to in the video it makes it easier again. It just gives you more
room.

Mrk836 says:

Mrscott. Would this process work on all w204 mines isnt cdi? And ive never
don this tupe of service but am willing to learn/ do this myself instead of
plucking 400+ at the dealer.

Cezar K says:

Thank you for reply!

MrScott52 says:

Thank you for the kind words about my video. Yes the oil galleries inside
the transmission are connected to the TC. That’s why you run the car in
Park for about a minute after the initial fill so the TC is filled up
again. Trust me it works. The only way to put the oil in is through the
drain hole in the oil pan.

michael beno says:

Hello Your video is the best I have seen. I am planning to do this in the
next few days. One WIS sheet I found talked about removing the rear engine
cross member and pre filling the transfer case with 700 ml of fluid before
doing the rest of the filling. I didn’t see you do this. Do you know of
this? Thank You Mike B

Cannot understand a word you are saying while driving.

Stephen Denney says:

scott your video is hands down the best ive seen i need to do the exact
same proceedure on my 722.9 transmission. i feel 100% confident now that
you posted this video, for all of us mechanics. my hat goes off to you
scott, you are 1 clever man.

MrScott52 says:

Thanks I appreciate the kind words. Scott

MrScott52 says:

Sorry that’s a shame. I must have set the volume to low during editing. I’m
just saying what a difference the service made and how I improvised and
didn’t use any special MB tools.

Trackandtrace says:

Hi mr.scott.great video.do you think it,s necessary to flush even the first
time of filterchange at 50000 km?
