Mercedes-Benz S550 – New Battery Install

Learn how to install a new battery in a Mercedes-Benz S550. We’ll show you how to replace/change/remove with simple tips and tricks to help get you started!

Tool List: T20 torx, 10mm wrench, 13mm wrench, Torque Wrench

Some vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz S550 have the 12 volt starting battery in the trunk, under the trunk floor panels. This video shows how to remove the floor panels and replace the battery.

Although this video may provide you with the basic procedures, we recommend that you check with the vehicle manufacture’s step by step procedures found in service/repair manuals for the vehicle you are working on.

Even if your vehicle did not come with an AGM battery, you can upgrade to an AGM battery for up to 2x the life. AGM can be found at most retail outlets. You can learn more about AGM here: https://www.autobatteries.com/en-us/battery-technology-types/absorbent-glass-mat-agm-battery

The use of a memory saving procedure will keep the memory alive on the vehicle’s computer during the battery replacement procedure. Referring to our Memory Saving video will provide you with various memory saving procedures that can be used according to vehicle manufacturer’s requirements. https://youtu.be/7Q2hSsUy8Nk

Some late model vehicles must have the 12 volt battery registered with the vehicle’s Battery Control Module or Computer after replacement. See these videos on Battery registration and coding for more details on the procedures at https://youtu.be/Uk0FzopRjM0 & https://youtu.be/cxOK_DczRGg

Always wear safety glasses and gloves when working with or near batteries.

John Traynham says:

Nicely done video but I think you need to discuss how to reset the ECUs if you don't have a way to maintain power in the system while changing the battery. Using a charger as you do, on a Ferrari of the same vintage, can destroy the ECUs (thousands of dollars). They provide a restart sequence once the new battery is in so the ECUs can relearn and not be damaged by possible current spikes.

'' keeping the memory alive ' as you say with an additional 12V battery , how long does one have time wise to connect this battery after the main battery is disconnected ? tia.

What if the computer gets reset… how do I fix it

Dennis DeSouza says:

Great Tutorial – saved me a ton of $$ doing it myself and putting the charger on to save the memory was a great step to know! Thanks!

Johnny Topside says:

I was quoted just under 900$ to replace the battery on my 2014 s550 is this a fair price? Seems like labor cost should be like 80$ tops after what I just watched.

Milton Wells says:

Great step-by-step demonstration. Video is straight to the point with quick additional side note precautions/considerations!!

Thanks to your video. Yesterday, 10/13/2020, I changed both the main and auxiliary batteries in my 2015 Mercedes S550. It took about 40 minutes to change both. No problems! Easy. You get high marks from me on showing us how to do it. Also, I had watched another YouTube video on the best batteries to purchase (which I did and I used their recommendations) and saved an additional 15% buying them from Advance Auto Parts.

Paul Baker says:

What kind of engineer would design a battery placement such as that? It's proof intelligence is measured on a circular scale without any stops.

EPMGFM says:

Whoever designed that battery location it's a dick

Keith Harleyk says:

I believe a new battery also has to be registered with a scan tool. Very expensive.

Moazzam Khawaja says:

Very well explained video. My S-Class 2014 (W222) battery has been showing some signs of weakness and I was thinking of changing it myself but is it that simple as you have have explained. I am hesitant in case it may show fault codes or need resetting afterwards, any thoughts

Dwayne Linder says:

how much does this battery have to do with the transmission?

Carlos says:

I replaced the battery on my 2011 and now I have a white “charge battery” message in the doc that I can’t get rid off, also the left side steering wheel buttons stopped working, it shows no codes when scanned with a snap on scanner 🙁

504Introvert says:

Do you have to reset any codes to replace the battery?
