Second thought, usually, the new type of batteries they produce are claimed to be sealed… so, how does that make any sense? Is that a real vent or something else all together? After all, millions of dollars went down to the design lab in Germany…

It's not a flaw.
Since it's intentional, it's a feature.
Nowadays, "automotive engineering" is making a big effort to make any engine too difficult for the casual guy to do simple maintenance as well as making things that will "break" easily.
I wouldn't count on a paper filter to remove toxic, flammable gas from the battery. Thanks, Hans and Franz.
