If your mercedes s class is stuck in park, it’s probably a broken plastic piece in the shift box used as a safety to lock the car in park. When it snaps, you can’t shift out of park at all. Here’s a quick two minute video of how to remove the piece. The work was actually done on a 2002 S430 (W220)
All that is good for some people but if you are a woman stuck 20 miles from home I say buy yourself another car or have it towed to your mechanic.
what do you call the part that need to replace?
I forgot to remove the key from the ignition before disassembling it all. The key is stuck in the ignition! Anyone can help?

Loved the video, saved me tons! For all who have this issue, I just fixed mine today and this video was a life saver! Took the piece out completely, no new part put in. Shifts anytime now… But at least I can put it into drive! If you have any questions I might be able to help!
this work for the 2000 ml320?
THE PLATIC RETRACTABLE PEICE FELL INTO MY SHIFTR FROM GETTING WORN OUT. NOW THRE IS A GAP AND I CAN SEE INSIDE TH SHIFTER. hOW DO I GET THIS RETRRACTABLE PLATIC THAT FOLLOWS TH SHIFTER COVERING THE GAP OUT?
Great Video! Thanks for the time and effort documenting it. Wondered if its the same mecanism in the W203 gear shift. Mine is c240 A2032672524
I was having the same issue with my shifter. I noticed it was becoming harder to get out of park. so I ordered the part. Before the part arrived it got stuck in park. So I took everything apart, removed the broken lever and epoxyed it once it dryed I reinstalled it. It worked great. It shifted very smoothly. Drives like new. It's a temporary fix until the part comes in. The epoxy is very strong so it should last a while.
Thank you so much for this video. It definitely made the process doable for a modestly skilled home mechanic. Interestingly, my black plastic piece was fine in 2003 S430, but I disassembled the shift lock instead of trying to troubleshoot what was wrong. I'm guessing either solenoid or something before the solenoid was bad.
my 03 is only sticking when it is very cold outside, like -20 C and below, when car is in garage – no problems, when car is parked outside – cant shift. when hit the knob down it sifts. Weird did not do it a single time from May till last week.
Guessing im going to be doing this job today
I did evrything that you say and it did work. But it gets stock again over and over. What is the problem ??? what should i fix to get it back to normal. i did not get that part Thanks in advance
Thank you very much from Japan . This video helped me to replace to the countermeasure parts.
It was great, you saved me $800.00 on my S600 Bi Turbo, thank you. You need mechanical skills and read what and how the system works before attempting such repair 🙂
