Remove & replace drive axles on 1996 Mazda Protege

I replaced the axle on both side of this 96 Mazda Protege. This is how I successfully did it.

gcadez77 says:

Is the 1990 about the same?

PAMAROSHOUSE says:

have you ever done an axel on a mazda 626 1995 do you think it its the same
steps.

ProjectM97 says:

Thanks for the upload. I drive my 96 Mazda hard so this is the second time
I need to replace the axle.

Steve Patco says:

I noticed there is a shim in there. Hate to mess with alignments.

Gilbert Arciniega says:

I think all axles are about the same. But some cars have axles on the
passenger side that go straight to the transmission as a long axle, rather
than a normal length axle going through the “center” part between the axle
and the transmission

Gilbert Arciniega says:

Surprisingly it took just a few hits. But it was easy with the small sledge
hammer.

Steve Patco says:

So I dont have to remove the lower ball joint on driver side? I tried using
fork but could not break it free. Does the bolt hold the ball joint? In
other words do I have to remove the bolt or just take off the nut?

Gilbert Arciniega says:

I think pretty much all cars are about the idea. But some cars have a long
axle going directly from the passenger side wheel to transmission instead
of the center one bolted on the engine.

Gilbert Arciniega says:

It’s Not needed to remove the ball joint. But the bolts from struts to
spindle assembly need to be removed so that the assembly can move down to
make clearance for the axle to come out. Although you can remove the ball
joint, but it was not needed for me though

Good job. How many hits or how hard did you actually have to hit the drive
shaft to free it?

PAMAROSHOUSE says:
