Part 5: My 76 Mazda RX-5 Cosmo Restoration – Shaving Holes and Minor Floor Repair

Part 5: My 76 Mazda RX-5 Cosmo Restoration – Shaving Holes and Minor Floor Repair

I’m taking a little break from engine work, so part 5 of my 76 RX-5 Cosmo restoration deals with some minor body work. In this video I shave the antenna and …

yeah, I have to agree on that one…

aaroncake says:

A few quick welds here and there without gloves aren’t a problem. Now TIG
welding…the worst part about that is you don’t realize you’re resting
your bare hand on the material until 10 or so seconds after you start the
arc and suddenly wonder where the pain is coming from…

zaknafein641 says:

Mig welding without gloves, doesn’t it get hot? Or are you tanning your
hands to make up for wearing driving gloves? 😉

aaroncake says:

@HEKTIC458 I spent a few hours yesterday editing part 6 as I was out of
town for a wedding and had a little downtime between events. With any luck
it will be done and uploaded in the next few days.

MrComaToes says:

Dremel is a great tool to have I think I own 5 or 6 with various bits and
every type of burr wire wheel and stone you can get. Any mechanic that
would scoff at a Dremel, just doesn’t get it. Cut-off wheels are great,
Dremel is for precision.

noob5000000 says:

yikes! I hate rust 🙁

aaroncake says:

I’m working on it right now. Still working on sheet metal, though in the
next few months I should be finished with that and moving onto all the more
interesting stuff. If you check the dates on the videos, the last one was
posted in early June.

aaroncake says:

Yeah, and it’s just tedious. The worst part is welding the fabricated patch
panel in. Well not so much the welding, but the 2 hours of grinding that
follows. Thankfully the major sheetmetal work is about 75% done so I’m sure
before the fall I’ll get to the stuff which I find more fun (intake, turbo,
exhaust, EFI wiring, etc.).

MrComaToes says:

I actually caught myself on fire with a cut-off wheel years ago… never
while welding though. The funny thing is my shirt was a damn polyester
uniform shirt and when it went up it made a 4 inch hole in about two
seconds flat, I was damn glad for the cotton t-shirt I was wearing under
it! For a split second I thought “Hmm, it suddenly warmed up outside” then
WHOA!!! LOL

Nice vids. I’ve subscribed. I’m an ex-mechanic who lived in Japan, will be
going back there next year. Feel free to check out my car vids i made
whilst in japan.

Preston Wolff says:

put some gloves on when you weld! if you keep doing that without gloves
then your hands will get burned sooo badly. i know from experience

xempt W says:

yea, you did a good job though considering how hard it is. could’nt imagine
having to do that everyday for a job. you’d go crazy after a while

aaroncake says:

@yerboogieman We’ve made the “Power Fist” joke many times. Princess Auto
chose an interesting name for their house brand of tools. Frankly, I’m
amazed as to what some people will go through to save a muscle car shell.
It’s hardly original at that point if it is patchwork of aftermarket panels.

1SWEETRX7 says:

Don’t you just love welding upside down. Hot metal chunks on the chest and
neck are so much fun.

aaroncake says:

@Sylwek1091 The big hole in the floor has slowed me down a little because I
decided to sand blast the entire floor. I should be done with that blasting
tonight, which is enough material for part 6. When I will post it, I don’t
quite know. Hopefully early next week if I get the time to do the editing.

aaroncake says:

@Draelren For a ’70s car which had almost no rust protection from the
factory, it’s doing pretty well. While the outside was sand blasted and
then primed by the previous owner, no attention was paid to the interior
and due to the crappy repair years ago, it rusted away from the inside out.
Thankfully, the damage is contained to that area under the pedals and a few
tiny holes in the same area on the passenger side. Once patched, I’ll just
blast/grind the floor and then POR-15 the surface rust.

aaroncake says:

Find an inexpensive used MIG welder, some scrap metal, a book on welding
and go at it. 🙂 Teaching yourself the basics isn’t too hard.

eastokcsteve73 says:

amazingly rust free for any old Japanese car let alone one from the north,
Nice car man.

no head says:

It’s amazing how you do all that stuff without gloves! If I did the same
thing, I would have no fingers or no hands at all at the moment 🙁

xempt W says:

ok thats cool. i done a welding test earlier this year on 2mm sheet metal
but it never mentioned the fact that the metal would warp if it was
continuous. now i know not to do that anyway. thanks

Preston Wolff says:

@aaroncake ahh very true

aaroncake says:

It’s too bad that a few months ago I wasn’t running the camera welding at
my bench, because I set my crotch on fire. Would have been great footage.

Grappler130 says:

Keyless entry I like. How much more “modernisms” are you planning on doing?

nevia37 says:

keep up the great work mate lookforward to the next vid

Sylwek1091 says:

When can I observe sixth part ? ? ? ? Please answer ;p
