Hi thorfoxxx, I would highly recommend using a timing light just to make
sure. This is a pretty big job so the timing light will tell you, if for
some reason, you are a tooth off on the cogs/belt or something. Cheap
insurance and it’s best to set it up with a light for maximum power….for
example if you want to go advanced a 2-3 degrees.

thorfoxxx says:

So as long as you align everything right, like you said, you don’t need to
use a timing light? or you do?

Etaund Hill says:

You will definitely have to at least remove the frnt few screws of the
plastic under tray. Because the crank pulley bolt shares the same
centerline (word chosen by some genius on the miata forum) as the strut
bar. That bolt will be the time consumer for anyone with this project. Also
those of us with the vvt intake cam seal. Those pics are VERY important!
This vid is Awesomeness and great! I’m half way done. Bumped my toe a
number of personal reasons. But it’s thanksgiving weekend nuff said? Enjoy
the vid guys!!!!!! And thumbs up him! NOW!

Partswise it’s around $300.., it can even get cheaper if you go for
aftermarket replacement parts – ex. non-Mazda OEM. In California the labor
rates are pretty high -$130/hr- so having a shop do something like this
could cost $1000. If you have time to do it, great way to save dollars
because wherever you live you will save on the labor costs. Good Luck!

Around how much did everything cost? If you remember, thanks.

Need to do this, just broke with college and never have time .

Eddie Trevizo says:

You skipped probably the most vital part of the job. Installing the belt on
the sprockets, good job

Dan Tsuchiya says:

Yes, this video will expose the water pump if that’s what you need to
change. It’s always a good idea to replace the timing belt. The most
critical part of the job is alignment of the cam pulleys and how it all
aligns with TDC at the crank. If it’s off, it won’t break anything, it just
won’t run right and you’ll need to go back in and re-index everything.

Dan Tsuchiya says:

Thanks Guys, good luck!

One of the best “camera” controls I have seen. Excellent footage. This
seems a bit daunting though. I will have to think hard about it before
attempting it myself. Thanks.

thanks i need to replace my water pump started leaking

ScottyAnimation says:

Excellent video production work. I replaced my water pump and timing belt
approx. 5 years ago (approx. 150,000 miles) and now my ’95 miata is over
200,000 miles and I’ve noticed the radiator appears to be leaking from the
top (not too bad) and leaking from the water pump (worse). I watched your
video for a refresher, thanks. It’s not too difficult, but when I first did
it, my timing was way off and I had to re/dis-assemble about 5 times before
I got it right. Hopefully this time will go better.
