Doug Cook says:

Best description of the Dorito-chip engine on Youtube! Rx-8's get a consistent 16MPG's city driving and 23MPG's highway. That's still the biggest drawback for rotaries.

Jeff Sears says:

If you never had one you just don’t understand.

epoxeclipse says:

LMAO I get 17-19 mpg in my 1986 rotary rx7 NOT your state 12mpg and it has 130k miles on it and climbing I still drive it.

Roger Downs says:

Huh? Mazda has been making cars with rotary engines since the 1970s. I remember being very impressed with the power of an RX-2 sedan back then, which you could rev up way beyond piston engines. The terrible fuel economy and excessive oil consumption mostly killed them off, so the rotary was only used in sports cars after that. Not sure how the present generation compares.

Armed Deaf Boi says:

These are really only good for racing as reliability isn’t the beat

D Wall says:

Very poor gas mileage and reliability.

BNOVA says:

Aren't rotary engines still used in planes?

Andre Noble says:

Looks like a lot of wear and tear. I doubt it lasts long.

Background Noise says:

Today on learning with Scotty.

Daniel R Eshelman says:

Don't forget the RX2. 70 CID, 650 4 barrel carb, two distributors, one of which was dual point. I had an RX2 and an RX7. Fun cars.

mustermann008 says:

Wankel Engines are also able to run on Diesel and H2O…

Craig Moorer says:

Coolest rotary engine…..LeRhone 9 cyl.

Robert Bennett says:

Just need to fix the seal issues

Jeff Johnson says:

I have a Rotary Suzuki Motorcycle and used to Race 12A and 13B Rotary engine based SCCA cars. Could easily push 11-12k rpm on them.

Aaron Malcolm says:

No mention of the hydrogen powered rx8?

P Williams says:

I like these videos. They are better than the history Channel..

Ronnie Balkaran says:

Great explanatory video. High quality. Well done.

P Williams says:

Miss my Vega.. ha

John Smith says:

Do yourself a favor. Don’t ever buy a car with a rotary engine.

Mick Brenton says:

I can remember back in the ‘70s, with a few mods, the RX3 used to pull like a 14 year old!!!

bbbart77 says:

I'm always learning something with Scotty.

John G. says:

Scotty I don't know how you do it, These videos are incredible, The most polished educational and entertaining productions I've seen!

Donald Hollingsworth says:

I have always loved the rotary engine even with its major fault of the Apex Seals not lasting very long. I wonder how long the engine would last if the chamber and/or the Apex Seals if they were ceramic coated like some high horsepower engine like the top of the pistons of the engine in Corvettes. It would be interesting to see if the engineers could increase the combustion ratio to rival that of a normal piston driven engine. Since the rotary only has 2 rotors making it a very compact engine, it would be interesting from a engineering stand point if more rotors could be added for more horsepower & torque.

Nekminute says:

Horrible gas mileage and oil consumption, not to mention the maintenance costs….

bgtx says:

Oh wow they are trying it again are they? I had one of these in the 80s. Died at 50k miles. Drove well til then though.
