I have a 1998 Mazda protege 1.8 engine. I’m really having a hard time finding an intake hose for it. What is the part number and can I find an intake hose compatible with mine?

I’ve owned all Fords, usually Escorts, cheap to fix and decent cars. But, I bought the Protege brand new in 03 and have 103,000 miles on it. So, after thoroughly describing what I’ve done and that hasn’t worked, any ideas from the the author mdavidson2183 or anybody else who owns this car and possibly had similar problems??? Thanks in advance.

Eric H. says:

So after $471 I didn’t have, had to take a cash advance, I’m still at square one. I had replaced the plugs/wires in Jan 2012, and it doesn’t knock a little bit under power, especially going up hills. Those plugs and wires are a royal pain to replace on the 2.0 DOHC engine, with the coil packs right on top, but just can’t imagine it would be the plugs/wires or coil packs. I bought quality plugs/wires, and even they weren’t cheap. I love the car, but almost wish I had stayed with Fords…more…

Eric H. says:

So I wrapped the hose completely again, didn’t want to take the original tape off for fear obliterating the hose. Still no good…so I took the car to a shop I trust, they put it on the computer and it came up with 2 codess, lean fuel mixture and unknown idle/stalling issue. Recommendation, obviously replacing the intake hose and replacing the EGR valve. Not cheap, the EGR valve was insane expensive, much like all the parts I’ve replaced on this car. Still not running right. More…sorry

Eric H. says:

I had the same problem a couple months ago on my 2003 Protege LX with 2.0 DOHC. I started have issues with stalling/rough idle at slow speeds and stops, wrappped he bellows that I found cracks w/ duct tape. Worked great for 2 months, immediately no idle/stall issues and the check engine light went off after a few cycles of running. Then a few days ago the problem resurfaced, so I looked at the intake again, some of the duct tape had appeared to come loose at some points. More…

mdavidson2183 says:

I replaced mine with a k&n typhoon system. They give you very good instructions and all the hardware and brackets are included.

itdraws says:

@EddyRuxpin, totally! Too bad we had to shell out 100 on the dealership diagnostic to locate the problem.

itdraws says:

Thanks for this how-to! I did this and the #2 Engine Coil on my wife’s protege. No more sputter or check engine light. We did a victory lap around the neighborhood after 🙂 Cheers!
