Easy job: I suggest getting a piece of paper and drawing a schematic to
help you. Notice that there are two coil packs to run four plugs. 2 plugs
have the pack on the top of them, 2 have a plug wire leading to them. Make
a diagram of where the plug wires go so you can remember. The coil packs
just have 10mm bolts holding them on. Be sure to buy two plug wires and two
boot kits, for the coil packs, you’ll understand when you see it. Antiseize
on the plugs, snug good but don’t overtighten.
Hi Tyler, I just bought the same car last Friday, Oct. 12, 2013, and this
is the first time I have seen this kind of a 4 cylinder spark plug wiring.
Can you please tell me how to change the spark plugs of this car. Thanks
much.
The firing order doesn’t much matter in this case, but #1 is closest to the
belts, and #4 is at the opposite(driver-side) end. If you’ll notice, each
coil pack operates 2 plugs. It mounts directly over one, and then has a
plug wire leading to the second plug that it fires. If you are getting a
code indicating misfire on #4 cylinder than it is the coil pack on the
driver-side because that one sits directly over #4. Mine would short out to
the valve cover under load, you could see it at night.
Hey Tyler I have the same car and the same problem. All I need to know is
which coil pack to change. The firing order is 1-3-4-2 and the computer
said that the coil pack that sparks #4 is the one that is bad. Does that
firing order mean that it is the 3rd plug from the left when I am standing
in front of my car? Or is it the last one that you just changed?
wow that sounds like heaven to me! I only keep two on at a time as its
about 130 min for one car here.
I rotate out vehicles. I keep the minimum liability insurance on only the
ones I drive. Insurance is mandatory here….it runs about $130 for 3 cars.
Madza…. Zoom Zoom!
tyler can i ask you a serious question. how can you have so many cars on
the road? do you have them all insured? or do you not need insurance in
your state? cause in ny it costs me about $500 a month for 3 cars. a dodge
dakota, a chevy uplander and my 74 newport… and i dont have a whole bunch
of points on my license or anything either.
which brand you used? I bought last week Beck Arnley
Yea those coils are odd. I went WTF when I first saw that. The old protege
is a damn good car. The one I drove was peppy.
when the coil pack starts failing, it’s more like, z-z-z-z-z-zzooooommmm
hahaha
Love the sound effects!
Ive found a lot of the time AC leaks are loose shrader valves that can be
tightened with some small needle nosed pliers. The caps alone won’t seal
it. And I usually also go around checking fittings. I guess the plastic
cracks then and causes it to arc out?
check your schrader valves for that a/c leak.90% of the time thats where it
is
also im not lucky enough to just throw some easy parts at something and
have it fix it. usually ill do the simple stuff, and replace small things
first. but that doesnt ever work for me. i always get stuck with some sort
of mess to work out.
Gee Tyler, I thought you only worked on REAL cars!! I guess I should see
your older videos. You did make it look so easy, that’s for sure. It
probably wouldn’t be a good idea to overtighten the bolts holding on those
coil packs, for obvious reasons. Personally, I’m too chicken to work on
anything built after 1981. I would consider myself more of a shadetree
mechanic, and a closet redneck. People like me have to stay in the closet
here in Snobville.
