12 dollars for oil,my god no wonder you’re changing the oil every 5000
miles, that is cheap shit oil.The grade should be 5/30 semi synthetic oil
and not 20/50.The correct good quality oil will probably cost you twice as
much as you paid, last for at least 10000 miles and protect your engine
properly.20/50 oil went out with the arc.Engines don’t smoke or burn oil
because it’s the wrong grade, the wrong grade just doesn’t protect your
engine like it should.5/30 semi synthetic is the recommended grade for mk1
and mk2.
You can’t judge the oil level by looking down the filler cap. When adding
oil, it drains from the filler (which is on the top of the engine) into the
oil pan, which is on the very bottom of the engine. The oil level can only
be checked by using the dip stick.
Ahh I see – then the european and american manuals differ. Still… oil has
moved on since the manual was printed, and since the engine was designed in
the 80´s and it will easily surpass 5000 miles, if you choose a quality or
even long life oil. Japanese engines are fantasticly reliable, and the one
in the mx5/miata is really fun as well.
Thanks for the comment! I didn’t show it in the video, but i make it
practice to check the level after letting the car sit a few minutes off the
ramps, and then again after running the engine for a bit.
that oil filter is in a good spot. my 04 mazdaspeed Miata is so cramped
that you have to get the filter from the left side. lots of burn from the
intake manifold and finger flicking.
@NeedsMoreDeathMetal This car (as with all fuel injected cars) has a fast
idle for cold-starts. When the motor gets some heat into it the idle drops
down to about 750rpm.
Good video, but a 5000 mile oil change? If you are running a decent semi or
fully synthetic oil, and replace the filter every oil change, you should
easily double those intervals to a 1000 miles. It´s bad for mother earth
and your wallet, and doesn´t do the engine any good. After all it´s not the
60´s anymore, and both engines and oils have moved on :).
I follow the maintenance schedule in the manual exactly, and it says to
change the oil every 5000 miles, and to use conventional oil, so that’s
what I do. She’s got nearly 250k miles now, and she’s always been
impeccably reliable.
You should have said, you shop at walmart for car parts…..and your a guy.
Especially a fram filter. A mighty max filter from jiffy lube is higher
quality.
Mazda recommends 10w-30 for normal use or 5w-30 in cold climates. High
mileage oil should theoretically lessen oil burning. Also I’ve heard that
Fram filters are pretty restrictive when it comes to oil flow.

how did you get it on the ramps?!?! My bumper scrapes and my miata
isn’t even lowered.
You make fun of dbags just like yourself. LMAO.
Fram filters aren’t great BUT this video
using thick oil causes alot of wear at staartup

My service manual says intervals are 9k or 12 months.
I loved this video. I wish you would do one for changing the transmission
and/or differential fluid. that would be awesome!
If yours idles that high your ISC valve might be bad…
20w-50 and FRAM filters are what got this car to 230k miles

wait, your name is greg and you have a vagina instead of a penis?
cool thanks for the helpful video.
Great video, loved the colourful commentary. And great work filming it
one-handed 🙂

So, you drive an mx5..and your a guy?

No, I just like what´s in my wallet, and the planet we live on – don´t you?
Do you drive a rocket car?

are miatas supposed to idle past 1500? mine does the same
Am I the only one who jumped a bit when he dropped the oil filter into the
dirty oil?
@MotorHeadGreg LOL i was just servicing it
I’m loving the ignorant american stereotypes. fucking ignorant fat walmart

Fram orange not great but he Used extended guard which actually is a very
high quality filter. Great video. Sorry for the duplicate posts.
Thanks!

What is a normal oil pressure? Thanks
depends on what oil you’re using and the rpm’s. Around 25psi at idle is
about right.
